Shopping from Disneyland Hotel

Hi all! Our trip is getting much closer (one week from today). We are staying at the DLH and don't plan to rent a car for the DL part of our trip. One of the things I am excited about DL resort over WDW is not being trapped on property and being able to shop and eat at outside venues.

Looking at the satellite maps it looks like Target and Wallgreens are a ways away and seems difficult to get there from DLH. I remember hearing them described as walking distance. I don't mind the distance as much as easy walking paths or areas. We were at NYC a few months ago and walked everywhere, but that city is set up for walking. Not something I hear described for LA.

Is it a good idea to walk around there, or are cabs easy to find? Is there any off property stops and restaurants that are recommended. We have 2 adults and 2 children.

We were thinking about going over to the Garden Grove (I think that is it.)

I can't attest to them being walking distance or not but I will say, lugging your purchases back would definitely be a hassle. I would think a cab wouldn't be bad at least on the way back. How old are the kids?

As far as garden grove there is someone here (pink budgie) who's sig says "beware the grooooooove". Not sur what it means. I've been meaning to ask though.

The Emperor's New Groove is one of my favorite movies. It is so overlooked but is so funny! Now you're gonna have to go watch it to find out what that means.

Garden Grove is a nearby city. Some hotels people stay at to go to DLR are actually in Garden Grove and not Anaheim. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Garden Grove once. Great hotel, but not walking distance.

As for Garden Walk, we've walked over there before from DLR. Last trip we ate dinner at Bubba Gumps.

Hey Harry, do you have an iPhone by any chance? If I'm trying to figure out how long a walk is I just use google maps on my phone, in walking mode and says 54 minutes to Target from the entrace to DL.

Others here have suggested ordering their groceries from Vons and they deliver it to your Hotel. I think that's a pretty cool option, for food anyway.

I stayed across the street from Disneyland at the Best Western Park Place Inn and had to go to Target once. We took a taxi and it didn't seem like it was within walking distance. It wasn't a far drive, but I remember going on freeway-type streets. I actually recall thinking that there's no way I would walk there. I think the taxi cost about $30 or $40 round trip and I just Googled a taxi company and called them on my cell phone.

Thanks, it was garden walk I was thinking of. I sound like one of those people that describe Epcot as the place with the big ball, and ask what bus goes to the Harry Potter land park. In some ways I hate being a newbie, but on the other hand I am so excited about going to 2 whole new parks (even if some of the rides are similar.)


We are getting a ride from LAX to the hotel from DH's cousin, so hopefully we will have enough time to stop and pick up a few things. Do the rooms at DLH have fridges? I am so spoiled by DVC.

I do have an iphone. I will have to figure out how to use google maps that way. Sounds like a good plan. I do have urban spoon and mouse wait on there. I wonder what other apps I should get? I even got a portable charger so I don't have to worry about using it too much and running out of battery.

Our kids are 10 and 7 (we will be there on her 7th birthday.) We went back and forth on it, but plan to bring an umbrella stroller for the 7 year old (she is very small, size 4/5 and weights about 42 lbs.) I think we might leave it at the hotel in the am, but bring it when we head back for the night since we are in the eastern time zone and I think she is going to be tried at night. DH's shoulder is hurting him and carrying her around is too hard. We do want to see world of color at least once in the 4 days we are in the parks.

I was just hoping to avoid over packing by not packing everything we might need because it is so hard to get things on property. I was thinking if it turns out we don't have something we can pick it up at a near by store. Like I could avoid over packing anyway. Not going to happen.

There's a Target north on Harbor. Would it be 30-40 for a cab? Doesn't seem that far to cost that much but I rarely take a cab.
There's a Costco just a couple of blocks past Target & the Character Warehouse is almost across the street.

As for the Gardenwalk, very blah. We were there two weeks ago, not much there except Hollister. Several restaurants. 2 hours free parking plus an hour with validation if you ate. We were out in less than the 2 hours (didn't eat). I don't think I'd go there again.

The Block at Orange - now there's a good place to go. DS14 discovered Dave & Busters and Hollisters. We'll go back there next time. There's a Target not too far from here.

The taxi fare really depends on how much taxis are in LA. In new york that distance would be about $6 to $9 each way depending on the traffic. It was less then $30 for us to get from JFK to Brooklyn (Atlantic Terminal). We found that short trips (but too long to walk) were cheaper for a family of 4 then taking the subway (2.50 X 4 = $10 each subway trip.)

DH's cousin mentioned taking us to the character outlet!

We did find our local Disney store outlet was full of cheap Disneyland merchandise. We spent about $80 and got about $250 worth souvenirs. Shirts, hoodies, pins for each of us.

It's not worth it for shopping but it's worth it if you're looking for restaurants other than those at DLR. They have Bubba Gumps, Cheesecake Factory, California Pizza Kitchen, PF Changs, just to name a few.

Oh Cheesecake factory. I forget about that. I have wanted to try there. The rest of the places they either have around my home or places we frequent often.

We went to the rainforest cafe near us last week. That is enough for the next 2 years or so. Every so often the kids want to go there.

Yeah, I'm very disapointed in the stores at Garden Walk. Great places to eat but the stores leave much to be desired. They are all clothing type stores. Not the kind that you walk through and find interesting things to look at. We went in 2009 and the only store of interest was the candy store but we have Powells at home that is 10 times better so even that wasn't exciting. I kept checking online to see if there are any other new stores and there aren't. Last trip we didn't even have to go in to the shopping center to get to Bubba Gumps so we didn't walk through it. Bubba Gumps is probably a new reg. stop for now each trip.

I looked Garden walk up on line, and it turns out the outside mall near my friends house is a garden walk too. I guess they are everywhere.

We went because our boys love seafood. DH and I don't care for seafood very much but I do like fish and chips which I had there and it was very good. One son loves shrimp and got the Shrimpers Heaven. The other got Mahi Mahi in bourbon (something like that). Both said it was very good. DH, who doesn't even like white fish got a cajun chicken sandwhich he really liked. We also found the service there to be excellent.

I don't know if Garden Walk is one of many owned by the same company or if they just happened to have the same name.
