Shopping DVDs, etc Prices?

Our first DVD player, which was supposedly able to play zone 1, was not able to play all of them.

Some cinema studios were trying to combat people importing dvds when the film had not been released over here by producing some dvds that were able to pick up if your machine had been modified or not. I cannot for the life of me remember what the term for it was (Obi help me out? ) but this resulted in dvd players not being able to play these discs which is perhaps what happened to you. I know this was a couple of years ago but I don't know if it is still happening now.

We just had an unmodified Sony dvd player and it had trouble playing a couple of dvds even when they were Region 2, upgraded to a Denon one and it plays everything.

Sony are the worst of the DVD manufacturers. Because they own a movie studio, they have really been working at making players which cannot be hacked.

In their latest laptops and computers they have installed a Matsu****a set of DVD-RAM drives (UJ range)
which CANNOT be hacked. No software works, and no firmware is available to hack them. Basically they continue to check the disc and if the two regions do not match, then they will not play the disc.
This is so annoying, especially in a laptop, where you can take the laptop all around the world, but not play any disc apart from the region it is encoded with.

The system that Wicket was talking about was RCE region coding enhancement. This was son of Region coding and now all hacked/modified stand alone dvd playes can play these discs, as the workings of RCE were eventually hacked.

As far as I know, NTSC is only an issue if you're playing videotapes.
For DVDs the issue is what zone they are, not NTSC vs PAL. The US DVDs are zone 1. I think that the UK is zone 2. However, you can buy a DVD player that plays both (make sure it does before you buy it). I may be wrong, but for DVDs, the TV is irrelevant. Only the DVD player matters.

If your TV doesnt support ntsc but your player is multi regionsl the pic will be in Black and white..

Just use the freeware program DVDDecryptor in file mode and copy the disk to your laptops harddrive and play it direct from there. DVDDecryptor removes the region coding

If your TV doesnt support ntsc but your player is multi regionsl the pic will be in Black and white..

Unless, as I stated earlier, the DVD player outputs the NTSC signal in Quazi-PAL

The best place to buy TV Series of DVD's is Walmart. For example when we go in a few weeks we plan to buy Desperate Housewives for $37.88 and Lost for $38.88. That works out about £20 per series (with the exchange rate I got). To buy both of them here you are looking at at least £30-£40. Also if you buy either of these from PlayUSA you are looking at $64.99.

One word of warning, please make sure that your DVD player is able to play region 1 DVD's.
