Hi all! This is my first post although I have been reading for a while. I have a question about using shopkick and was hoping maybe someone knew the answer.

I have $1200 to pay for the remaining balance of my trip. I wanted to pay with gift cards and get them at a discount. Originally I was going to go to my local grocery store and get 12 $100 gift cards, where you get 10 cents off a gallon of gas for every 50 dollars spent, but I have a small car and the savings would only be around $25.

Then I thought I could use shopkick at the Disney store and get one gift card worth $1000 (way easier than 12 cards). I will get 1 kick for every $1 I spend, and 750 bonus kicks if I spend $75. But here are my questions:

1. If I buy gift cards will they count for buy and collect?
2. Say I buy $150 dollars of merchandise, will I get 2 750 kick bonus
rewards? Would I have to split the transaction into two $75 dollar
transactions?
3. Is there a limit to the dollar per dollar matching? Or a limit to the
bonus rewards?

I calculated this way I would be able to get 11 $5 gift cards, which would be $55 instead of only $25. I have tried to look online for the answer to this question but haven't found anything, and I emailed them but they haven't gotten back to me. Does anyone know if this would work?

I just got an answer from them. Here is what it says:

You can earn Buy & Collect kicks from purchasing gift cards, and once you hit a threshold we give you your kicks, it's not x amount of kicks for every $75, it's just x kicks for making a purchase over $75. There is also no dollar matching limit! :)

I'm interested in hearing if it works out for you. I'm still waiting on my 1000 kick bonus from a purchase I made on 12/7/12 -- it's supposed to be added to my account within the next 7 days. So you should factor in that waiting time for those kicks to post to your account.

I've bought Disney gift cards from the grocery store using my AMEX that gives 6% cash back (it's the American Express Blue Cash Preferred) so in your case of $1200, it would give $72 back. AMEX has started a limit on how much eligible spending can be done in the 6% category ($6000 max/calendar year). Even with the annual fee of $75, you still get back a net $285 if you spend $6000 in a grocery store for the year (gift card purchases do count toward that $6000 spend). It's been a real sweet cashback card to me for the past year and I'm disappointed that they've imposed a limit now. Oh well, all good things must come to an end. I'm still keeping it though and will park it once I've got $6000 spent at the grocery stores, and move on to my other cards.

ETA: I just saw your post above (I must have been writing at the same time) -- that's great news! Thanks for sharing!

I am a big shopkick user, but will not link my cc to it. That's just me. I will use it to get kicks when i walk in a store or scan items, but the big kicks come when you link your cc for purchases.

I am slowly working my way to a starbucks gc.

If it were me, I'd still make separate $75 purchases - just in case they didn't understand your question correctly. Otherwise they're saying you only get the 1000 bonus kicks the first time you make a $75+ purchase.

Unless you're trying to avoid having multiple cards.

Just wondering if you went through with this plan to get your gift cards or if you went another route. If you did go through shopkick how did it work out for you?

If you haven't done it yet (I realize this was a few months ago so you probably have) from my understanding you get 1 kick per $1 you spend plus a one time bonus if you spend x amount. So you would only get 750 kicks plus 1 for each $1. So to maximize your benefit doing multiple transactions would be your best bet. I recently banked 180 kicks for buying a $30 gc in store before a day trip to WDW.

Hope it all worked out for you!

I ended up buying the gift cards at my local grocery store. The response I got from Shopkick was:

From this I took it would be only a one time bonus even if I did multiple transactions. I ended up getting more money out of it with the 10 cents off a gallon of gas from the grocery store. This year I am buying early whenever they have special promos I pick up some extra gift cards for 20 cents off a gallon.

I just started shopkick last week. I already have 500 points.
Do you think it is safe to link a card? Has anyone had any trouble?

I have had my card linked for a few months now and have has 0 problems. It is great for buying gift cards at the Disney Store before a trip because you get bonus kicks for higher purchases! I got 180 for a $30 gift card.

I've had my card linked for months with 0 problems, mostly to get points at Babies R Us. At Target I use my redcard debit for purchases for the 5% discount, but I use shopkick at Target to scan things and apply my points to Target gift cards. (I also buy our Disney GCs at Target for the discount - more valuable than points.)

does shopkick send a physical gift card or some kind of code to redeem?

When you redeem, the gift 'card' will get stored in your account and, if you have an iPhone, for some GCs you can add it to your Passbook. The gift cards will have a barcode the cashier can scan or a code for them to enter, just pull it up and show them your phone.
