Shooting past a cage?

I know there's tricks to making a cage "disappear" when shooting animals (photographically speaking, that is......) I went to our local zoo today and after reviewing pics had to delete a lot where the cage was in focus and the animal was blurry.

Is the trick just being as close as possible to the cage and zoomed in on the animal as much as possible????

Large Aperture, Long Focal Length, Manual focus if needed.

Manual focus your lens so the auto focus isnt hunting the focus by bouncing between the fence/cage and the intended subject.

If the animal is more than 20 feet away and you don't have manual focus, then you can get decent results by setting infinity lock on the lens if you at least have that feature.

(Infinity lock should be close to best focus if not actual focus for subjects at least 30 feet away.)
