Shoes for college graduation?

Is it appropriate to wear a dressy type of flip flop to my graduation? Looking at "attire" that the college wants us to wear, it doesn't say anything about shoes, just that they should be black. We will be walking through gravel, dirt, grass, and concrete and I don't do well in heels on flat surfaces, nevermind uneven ones lol.

I definitely would not wear heels to walk on gravel. I'd pick something comfy. If they're dark colored (like your robes) I doubt anyone will notice.

No. Flip-flops are not appropriate for a formal occasion like graduation.

Find yourself a pr. of ballerina flats that work with the color of your graduation gown (black works for most situations). Your feet will stay clean and you won't get gravel under your toes, either. You can even buy them at PayLess or Target if you don't think that you'll wear them again: http://www.target.com/Mossimo-Suppl...F8&frombrowse=1&node=3429561#communityReviews

(Personally I always keep a pr. of black leather flats in my wardrobe for wearing at funerals. You're on your feet for hours, but it doesn't do to go bare-toed.)

The students at our graduations tend to wear all kinds of wild stuff to Senior Day and Baccalaureate (which are events wear robes are required prior to the graduation ceremony itself). However, on for the Graduation ceremony, they tend to wear more appropriate shoes (dressy flats, heels, dressy sandals). Sure, some are still making a statement and you'll see light-up glass slippers and such---but many are aware that "Grandma" will be getting those graduation pictures and that the occasion is a important day in their lives and are thus, dressier.

I don't think flip-flops or dressy thong sandals look good at all with a graduation robe. You look all formal and conservative on the top 3/4ths of the body and then there's this whimsical/summer thing going on with the feet.

So, I agree with the ballerina flats on the bottom.

Sorry but there is no such thing as dressy flip-flops. You can add all the sparkles you want but they are still flip-flops. Find a pair of low healed pumps. This is a big deal, you are graduating from college.

I'd wear dressy flats OR if you really feel like you need to wear flip flops, hit up a higher end flip flop store, like J.Crew. They have some dressier flip flops that are leather and look a bit classier...

I do think dressy flats are the way to go though.

Congrats!

I graduated last year. I wore dressy sandals to honors convocation and my department graduation ceremony. Those were smaller and more formal (but still in cap and gown). The day of the big graduation, I wore flip flops. And they were mom approved;) There were 3000+ people graduating; I can guarantee no one was looking at my feet. And quite frankly, my feet had been destroyed the day before by the dressy sandals, so no way was I putting those on again. And neither I, nor anyone else, felt that they ruined the pictures.
Most of my female classmates were wearing similar shoes.

That's what I was thinking. :confused3

DD is graduating from college this month...never thought to ask her what she'll be wearing on her feet. :confused3 But I will now! :)

OP here
lol, I feel like telling them I will not attend, this whole graduation is causing me stress and making me spend $$$ that I did not want to spend. (So maybe I am cheap, but I had to BUY my own honors cord!) Shoes, dress, jewelry, under garments....small fortune lol.

Also, if it rains I am only allowed 3 tickets, so my DD. DF, and then I'd have to chose between my mom and Dad :sad2: They will have the ceremony aired on TVs in rooms around the campus, as my sis and grandfather are also going, but its just annoying. lol.

Also, I don't know what the proper etiquette is, I'd like to invite my aunt to the ceremony, but she has 3 kids, 2 of which will be in school, and her youngest is only 2. I don't really expect her to come as I am sure it will be too much of a hassle taking her kids out of school, etc. but at the same time I don't want her to feel like I didn't want her there, KWIM?

Anyway, back to the shoes, do you think these are cute or old looking?

Those bow shoes from Payless are super cute and I think they'd be appropriate. (I, however, wear flip-flops everywhere except for work, so I'd probably be in the "flip-flop" crew!)

Good luck shoe shopping and congrats on the graduation!

From a purely practical standpoint, flip flops on gravel sounds painful. You know you'll wind up with stones in your shoes. Otherwise, I would wear whatever I wanted. Who's going to care?

OP- I think the link to the shoes you posted are adorable and entirely perfect for your graduation day!!

Sorry about the stress this day is causing you-- I was very close to not going to my graduation because I had too much stuff going on (moving out, too much family in town , etc). Honestly, my graduation wasn't all that memorable. I'm glad I went though. DH didn't go to his and he doesn't regret it at all.

Hope the day is better than you expect!

I attended dh's grad last weekend and was amazed at all of the teetering stilletos girls wore up to get their diplomas! Yikes! They weren't in the majority, but they stood out (and up, haha). I saw a large variety of footware- from the flops to the stilletos. Especially, since your grad is outdoors, I think flip-flops are appropriate. I'm planning on wearing leopard print ballet flats to my own grad, though! Good luck and congrats!

I was shocked how much those things can go for! We told DD we'd pay for hers..."Happy Graduation!" LOL

And congrats to you...I didn't realize you were a wife-to-be and mom. Good for you for getting your degree now! And as stressful as it might be, I think it would be a really special thing for your DD to see you graduate. :)

I think flip-flops are appropriate
just because that’s what i wore :cutie:

I just graduated from UF 2 weeks ago, and saw numerous people in flip flops, most of which were black. Although, this is FL and we wear flip flops no matter what the occasion. I personally went with a 2 1/2 inch dressy sandals..but I think whatever you are most comfortable walking in works best.
Whatever you choose to wear...enjoy your day and congrats!

With shorts and a tee-shirt, flip-flops are great.
With a casual sun-dress, flip-flops are fine.

But I have to vote NO to flip-flops with a formal graduation gown. They won't "match" the tone of the outfit in the least, and they'll look silly. You're bound to take pictures with family, and your feet'll show in those.
