Shocked with the new furniture

We are presently staying at OKW in a one bedroom( home resort ) and we haven't been here in awhile, we were staying the other resorts the last 3-4 years. I am shocked at the poor quality and comfort of the new furniture, both couches and sofabed and even the mattress in the bedroom are sub standard in my opinion and not as comfortable as in the past.

I tried the full sofabed and it feels like I'm laying on some cheap $300 sofabed from Big Lots, there is a hump in the middle of my back, I can feel the metal under the cheap mattress whereas in the past I was perfectly happy sleeping on the sofabed. At least the new single sofabed seems like the old quality.

The living room couch's are a steep slide in quality, the cushions feel like a hard plastic and very stiff, and also very uncomfortable

And the mattress in the bedroom is hard to the point like it feels as if I'm laying on a slab. In the past the king size mattress felt as good as any high quality hotel, but not anymore in my opinion.

I appreciate the fact that the furniture needs to last, but this is not good, what are they trying to do? Keep us from wanting to book long vacations? If we can't stand sleeping on the furniture for more than 3 nights at a time, it might be time to sell my interest.

I'd like to hear others and their feelings about this.

Also, once again the housekeeping has alot to be desired, I shouldn't see large hunks of black mildew coming from the bottom of the shower door onto the floor of the shower when water gets sprayed onto the door, If they can't figure this out, maybe they need to start using frameless shower doors.

Plus they need to send someone from maintenance around with one of those $2.99 tools that you can buy at Home depot that will pull all the old hair from the bathroom sink drain, I pulled up a large wad of black disgusting hair/mildew/soap scum and dirt out of the drain with a tweezers this morning when the sink would no longer drain.

At least when I called to report it to maintenance, the girl I spoke with knew exactly what I was talking about as she has one of those tools from Home Depot and when I mentioned what I pulled out of the drain, she also said it was pretty gross. and she would have someone here in the morning.

Thanks for the tip, I plan on doing that right away. And I'll be sure to post their response if any.

The love seats and sleeper sofas are the original couches, only recovered, they are not brand new. Just as the tables and chairs are the original tables & chairs that have been repainted/recovered. The single sleeper chair is quite comfortable for sleeping...for sitting, not so much. Most reports here are that people love the new mattresses on the king and queen beds.

I really hate the new roman blinds on the balcony doors. They look OK, but opening and closing them is a pain. And I don't care for the laminate floor...the sound echos now, with no carpet or drapes to absorb it.

We found nicks on the bedside tables in the master bedroom where you could see the old pickled wood color under the brown paint. Same with the table.

And I agree on the sleeper sofa and loveseat. That fabric feels like hardware cloth - if you need a dermabrasion on your legs, all you need to do it sit on that couch.

I liked the old sleeper sofa with the bar better than this new platform one. Or the one at BWV and BCV -those are much more comfortable for sleeping, but nearly as bad for sitting.

But our king sized bed was very comfortable. We've never had a bad bed a OKW.

We also had a bad problem with closing the sleeper sofa. It was bent or something and you had to reach underneath and push the works inside to get it to close. Never had that problem with the older ones. And these newer ones are hard to open up, too. When you try pulling them open, the sofa slides on the floor unless you hold it with your other foot.

Just to clarify, there are some of the platform sleeper sofas at OKW, but most of them are the original ones with the bars, only recovered. The platforms ones apparently replaced items that were too badly damaged to repair.

Great, I will save on spa services then on my next visit! ;) :rotfl:

We have enough issues with our memberships. I hope that Disney hasn't decided to reduce the quality of the furnishings when they do rehabs like they did with new construction.

New construction I can understand, that's out of Disney's pocket, but rehabs are paid for by our dues. How much would it really cost to do the job right and to clean the units like they should be cleaned?

I think we're already there, at OKW the full rehab did not update any of the kitchen cabinets, bathroom cabinets, tiles, grout, shower stalls etc. They even went as far as taking the old bedroom furniture and restaining them, as well as the original coffee tables and recrackling it to such an extreme as not to show glass stains, nicks etc. It looks a bit odd!

We were there in June, had a GV, a 2br and a studio and I have to say, each was very clean, bathrooms included, no sign of any disrepair or abuse, mold etc. Each villa smelled really fresh (many complained about OKW having a musty smell). The sofa in the 2br and the GV were the ones with the bar, previous to that we'd mostly had the onces similar to the sleeper chair. The fabric is the same, you can almost slide off the couch! it's so stiff. The beds were fine, I've never had a bed that wasn't comfortable at OKW. Over all, I was really pleased with the refurb.

My only complain, those darn plastic crank blinds at the balcony door and windows. 20 minute process, morning and night, what a pain not to mention I scraped my knuckles! I'd like to meet up with the idiot who dreamed this up as a commercial application! :confused3

I also found on this trip that the CM's and mousekeeping had stepped up their game, I was impressed!

I don't mind that they repaired and refinished the tables, chairs, bed tables, headboards, etc. I just wish they had chosen better colors...and had not crackled the living room coffee table.

The original furniture was probably much better built than any commercial furniture available today, and it would have cost more $ to replace it with lower quality than the original.

But those blinds on the balcony door are just worthless. They look OK, but the mechanism is terrible. A pull across drape would have been better.

They could have used a split cord that didn't extend all the way down to the floor instead of that beaded cord for the roman shades. That is their childproof/safety feature.

And the alligator table finish is rather ugly. Wonder how much that cost?

I totally agree-we were there in May in 1 bedroom and I hated those Roman shades on the door. Had difficulty in opening the door to the patio area too, but maintenance did come and replace the lock.

the bathroom shower needed new tile and the washer was extremely noisy.

DH liked the mattress on the bed, but I slept on the couch with DDG several nights and it was not pleasant.

I would have agreed if they had done a better job. A good piece of furniture, properly refinished, should appear new not poorly refinished, but overall it doesn't bother me.

Maybe I'm wrong but it seems that they spent more money or picked better furnishings on the BWV refurb, perhaps it was because it's attached to the inn/hotel. Of course it's just a perception I have no info or stats to back it up!

Agreed. The rooms in which we've stayed the bed frames had been replaced with a platform base and headboard fastened to the wall. We really liked the old frames which allowed us to store suitcases, souvenirs, etc. under the bed leaving more room in the closets and draws for our clothes.

They may be child safe but heaven help the adults. I've nicked my hands on those d**n pulls more often than I care to admit. It got so that we would just open the door on the balcony and turn up the ac rather than losing time and getting our knuckles scraped opening and shutting those darn things.

Sounds like they took the "Space Mountain DisneyWORLD" approach (slap some paint on and call it a renovation) vs the "Space Mountain DisneyLAND" version which was an honest renovation. Too bad.

Really? Just about the OKW furniture or about everything? Either way, it sounds as is more people should be complaining where it counts.

I know for sure about the changes to OKW. I specifically asked and was told that response to the changes was over whelmingly positive.

Be careful storing luggage under beds. This is a sure way to transport bed bugs if they are there. Given the current epidemic of those nasty things, we no longer store anything under hotel beds. Could be one reason why we are now seeing more platform beds.

We actually always have someone sleeping on the sleeper sofa. The people who have slept on them in our groups prefer the platform ones for sleeping. They are a bit odd for sitting on though - the cushions are so hard and slippery that it's hard to sit on them.

I agree that the original furniture was probably better quality than what they could replace it with.

I just wish they had stripped the original finish and not just applied a finish over the top. We saw a number of places where the finish scratched and the old finish showed thru.
The crackle on the coffee table was not as bad in real life as I expected from the pictures, but it did look kind of odd.
I didn't like all the dark colors they chose.

I wasn't as bothered as some with the direction of the renovation. I will say that I think OKW lost a little of it ambiance in the change. My main complaint was the comforter on the bed. That thing could have stood aganst the wall on it's own. Stiff and rough. Nothing comfortable about it at all.
