After careful training over the past few months, and tapering over the past 10 days, i did my last 6 mile run yesterday. Today, for the first time in a year, my right shin is hurting. Aaarrrgggghhh! Went home over lunch to ice and am going to the doctor after work. I am a stubborn one. Has anyone run the 1/2 with shin pain?

Emma - Don't worry too much! I have had shin splints on and off for 9 months! I am doing Goofy next week!!!!:scared1:

I would go get yourself some tape (K Tape works awesome for me!) and tape it up for the run, it will take some of the pain away, ice everyday at least once and make sure they are warm the rest of the time (ie you are not shivering cold, dont know if it is the same for everyone but being cold hurts my shins!) try a bath with epson salts and while in the bath massage up and down the shin.

I know its not ideal but you will do fine in your race, mine usually warm up at about mile 5 and dont bother me at all after that.

After the race though I would take some time off to let them heal

good luck

Kirsty

PS I have no medical knowledge about this just my own experience, if the dr says do something different listen to him!!!

Listen to the doctor??? I prefer to listen to those who tell me what I want to hear!!! Last year I hurt my knee biking while tapering last year, and now this. Maybe I should not taper anymore :). Thanks for the good vibes and thoughts Kirsty!!!

Lol I didnt even go to the dr, I knew what he would say :lmao:

Oh I just remembered, if you go to the expo there is a K Tape stand and they will tape your leg up for you the right way, I honestly didnt think a little tape would help but you would be amazed how much more comfortable I am with it on!

See you at the finish line :thumbsup2

KEEP your appointment. A sudden onset of shin splints can be more than shin splints; especially this late in the game.

If he says shin splints and doesn't recommend running then obviously you will do what you need to do. We all would. If he starts to talk about a hard tissue injury and a radiograph (x-ray) confirms a hard tissue injury, then follow his advice.

Good luck and we will see you this weekend

Charles is right, don't miss you app. If I had gone to a Dr when my probs started I might not be in such pain now.

I hope he says its just shin splints, then ice and tape are awesome :goodvibes

Kirsty Does the K tape stand tape for other things? Along with nursing my IT bands, I developed a quad strain. Was thinking that taping that might help.

As far as I am aware they show you how to tape for anything, it might require you actually buy some but it's only about $12.99 and if it works as well for other problems as it does for mine it's well worth it!

Good luck

kirsty

My bad it's actually called KT tape, oh and you can shower in it so if you are goofy like me when they fit it properly you can keep it on till after both races

kirsty

LET me add that KTTape is a great solution if you do not have hard tissue injuries.

You may want to pick it up locally but IO think I would visit KTTape at the expo. Have them show you how to apply (i.e. do it for you). Leave it on overnitght going into the race. Do not use lotions that morning.

Sorry for the abbreviated earlier message...work got in the way. man i hate it when that happens!

Good news is it does not look like a stress fracture. I had an x-ray, and it came back negative. Now he did warn that to be sure, I would have to have an MRI, but because nothing showed up on the x-ray, he did not think I needed to have it done. His suggestion was to go ahead a run, and then ice, ice, ice and motrin a few hours after the race. Then ice some more, and I will probably have to take extended time off after the race. I asked about tape, and he said it is possible, but is concerned that it could be too restrictive?? I have a nice pair of $60 compression type knee high socks that make me look I stepped out of a 1970's high school basketball team photo, but hey, with the cold weather, my legs will probably be covered anyway!

Thanks for all the advice and good vibes. Really, this race would not be nearly as exciting if I did not have my Diser's to guide me! Thank goodness for e-ticket so I can keep up at work too!

Two things. Neither are really going to feel good. When you get to Disney take the socks out for a run. See how they feel in your shoes and whether you can last a marathon in them. With today's sewing you should not have an issue.

The other is to get taped at the expo and take a quink mile spin with the tape. If it feel bad, rip it and go with the sox.

I am believer in compression especially when done for a purpose.

One pice of advice on the post race motrin. If you read the latest reports you will find that the consensous say it is OK to take once you can take fluids normally and once they start to leave normally.

Good luck this weekend.

Thanks Charles for the advice. One more question. How simple is it to tape? We are registering Thursday, and don't think keeping the tape on for 1 1/2 days will work. Is is something, that after I let them do it for me, I could do on my own without messing it up?

Its straight forward, stop off at the booth and let them demo.... Then tape up race morning

The reason I am always suggesting a demo or actual taping is that the amount of stretch you put into the tape and where the stretch in the tape is located is important. Splints are a little more difficult than others.

Look at this for instruction.

Also as I think about it....keep your socks for non race times. It wouldn't hurt to wear them the day before and immediately post race.

I'll be running in compression socks for shin splints- managed to find some black ones so they're slightly less 'hospital patient' looking. A physio taped my shins for me and i found it very uncomfortable under my foot so I'd definitely go out for a brief run or at least decent walk with the taping on.

The socks are on and probably will not come off until the race. And since they were so expensive, I have one good pair, and one ok pair. Yes, I will try to wash them, but ooh, they could be interesting once I get to the expo...I am going to scare the people wrapping my leg:scared1:

I have my PT do ART on my shins when that happens. The treatment tends to hurt a lot more than the splints sometimes but they do go away afterward. I also ice if I can get over to see him.
