Add my vote to those who said to propose early, even if you don't yet have the ring.
My then-boyfriend (sorry to give away the ending) took me up to Maine for a beautiful autumn weekend over Halloween. All weekend long, he was distant and nervous and moody, completely unlike the man I had known and loved for a year prior.
At the end of the weekend, I confronted him, and basically told him that if he had brought me up to Maine to break up with me, that I'd prefer if he just did it and got it over with, rather than torturing me with tension for a moment longer.
Then he proposed.
Looking back, he says that he was so nervous all weekend that he couldn't enjoy himself. That, added to the fact that he was terrified of losing the ring, made him miserable. He definitely wishes he would have proposed on day 1, and then had the rest of the trip to celebrate.
