She's definitely not a guard dog

My DH came home and realized he had locked himself out. He remembered the cellar door was not locked and decided to enter that way and come up the stairs to the house. Well, he thought for sure our dog would go nuts barking as she does when people come over.

He opened the upstairs door and thought our dog would greet him either growling or barking, but in fact he had to search for her! He found her hiding behind the couch peeking out around the side!

She's an australian shepard, 6 years old and her name is Pepper, though we affectionately refer to her as "girl".

Isn't it funny how dogs are creatures of habit too? I think by DH coming in another way which nobody does, really freaked her out.

Also - when we say "come in!" or "hi!" when people come to our home, she goes nuts barking alerting us that people are here (obviously).

If we are all outside with her, we say "come in" or "hi!" and she barks! LOL! Ok, that's kind of cruel, but it's a riot since she looks around to see if anyone is really here!

What funny little habits or actions does your dog(s) have?

It's funny how dogs can be so human! I would've hid too is someone was coming into my home by an abnormal route. LOL!!!

Our second generation dog (Samantha) is a sweetheart but will never live up to the smarts our first dog (Charcoal) had. However, Samantha has grown smarter in the 7 years we've had her. But she is also a chicken too. When we have visiting "cousin" animals over and there is a bit of a ruckus, she runs and hides under my DH's desk.

But like I said, she is a real sweetheart and aims to please. Even the kitties can bulldoze her!

The lawn guys once came to the door to ask if I could let the dogs in so they could do the back yard. They were a little concerned because they had been barking. I told them they wouldn't bother them, I was wrong when they went out back our 6yo cattle dog brought them her ball.

Another time I heard the dogs barking, the lawn guys were there and edging the other side of the fence. The dogs ran along and barked at them through the fence. The barking stopped later, they had started mowing inside the fence so the dogs retreated to the porch to watch.

We are well guarded, as long as someone stays on the other side of the fence the dogs will bark. Inside they are to be avoided or instant friends. ;)

We can't go into the bathroom to take a shower w/o the dogs going crazy! They bark like we are about to be killed by the evil shower gods or something.

Whenever we bring the dogs outside, Maggie, our Yorkie, bites at our feet. Not sure why she does this. She also barks and chases Milo, our Corgi, to the other end of the yard then comes back inside. Strange.

Milo is really "tough" inside of the fence. He'll act like he'll bite your head off. But if you come inside, he's scared. So, if someone ever breaks into our house, my goal is to grab Milo and run into the yard. ;)

Lorix,

We also have a 6 year old Australian Shepherd. Her name is Nellie, we call her Nelson.

She barks at our next door neighbor only when she sees him in his back yard (but never in the front yard) and she sounds like she wants to tear him apart. But when he leans over the fence to pet her, she licks him and wags her whole back end.
