Shepherds Pie Recipe

If Im not mistaken Shepherds pie is with Lamb and Cottage pie is with beef.

You're right. In England, Shepherd's pie is made with lamb because shepherds herd SHEEP. But, here is the U.S. I've seen it made a lot with beef. And other people have listed they make theirs with ground turkey to lighten it up.

Until I saw Gordon Ramsay on Kitchen Nightmares, ream someone out for making Shepherd's pie wrong at a restaurant, I've never heard of Cottage pie. :confused3

Never would have guessed there were so many variations/recipies.....

I always make cottage pie and just cook the ground beef with onion and some seasoning, stir in some diced carrots or some frozen peas or corn then mix it with some gravy so its not dry, but not runny and put the mashed potatoes on top and cook until its hot and nicely browned on the top.

I have also added mushrooms to it and at times top it with cheese. The good thing is you can customize it to what your family likes.

I use ground beef, McCormick brown gravy package and onion gravy package. A bag of frozen peas and carrots thawed and put instant mashed potato on top. The recipe is from the McCormick recipe app. I've done it several times.. Yummy.

Because DH hates most veggies, my shepard's pie is very different. I make taco meat and then top it with cheese and then mashed potatoes and then more cheese. It is not a true shepard pie but that is what we call it.

My dad's Shepherd's Pie has only three main ingredients, and I'd think it could be made dairy free pretty easily. It's nowhere near a fancy dinner, but it is yummy, and very easy.

He makes it in a loaf pan, first layering a can of creamed corn in the bottom (I sometimes add a handful or two of frozen corn kernels to this for some extra bulk), then tops it with a layer of browned ground beef (I usually saute an onion along with the beef, and add a few dashes of worcestershire sauce for flavor), and tops it with mashed potatoes. He uses a fork to make ridges in the potato topping, which get nicely crunchy when it bakes. Pop the whole thing into a 350º oven and bake until the potato topping is golden brown.

I do Rachel Ray's recipe all the time. I love the dish (reminds me of EPCOT) but needed to go with poultry because of my husband's heart health requirements, he and my kids love this one. To keep the fat low and flavor high I go with purdue ground chicken breast, skip the bacon and just cook the onions etc in a tiny bit of bacon fat I keep on hand in the freezer collected when the kids eat it, and use fat free half and half instead of the cream - I bet you can use non dairy creamer here too as long as its not sweetened or flavored if that would be ok for your son.

In my case I spread the meat out into a roasting pan for maximum mashed potato loading.

Good luck with whatever recipe you choose

That's basically how I was taught to make it, beef on the bottom is the only difference. We've never used beef broth or gravy.
