I haven't seen this posted before, so I'm hoping someone can help me...

We're taking a trip in December and my FIL is allergic to shellfish. Unfortunately, one of DH and my favorite restaurants is O'Hana's. I'm worried that since everything is cooked over the 'pit' on the skewers, the beef and turkey might be contaminated by the shrimp. I'd hate for him to have a reaction.

Also, I've been reading reviews about Cape May and thinking I might like to eat there for dinner. Once again, I'm concerned about the shellfish reaction.

I know that Disney chef's are very accomodating, just didn't know if this was asking a bit too much.

Anyone else had a similar situation?

Thanks for your help...

I would avoid both of those restaurants. Cape May would probably be the safer of the two.

Why not try some new places this trip and then you can go back to your favorites next tiem around.

Another option would be paying for your FIL to do soemthing else (does he golf/enjoy a massage/etc.) while you and DH dine at one of those restaurants.

My 2 cents...

If your heart is set on Ohana's, I would call a day ahead and see if they can make your FIL some steak and turkey specially "segregated" from the shrimp. I would imagine they could do it without major crisis.

Re Cape May, I don't know how severe your FIL's allergies are, but I have a girlfriend who swells up if the party two tables over eats oysters or clams. Apparently, some people's allergies are so bad that the smell can get to them. In that case, Cape May would be a disaster for your FIL, as there are several in-the-shell options on the buffet. I'd ask him before trying that one...

DH is allergic to shellfish and we had no problem at OHana's. We told the server when we sat down and she was careful to point out that the wontons had seafood in them and she made certain DH's food was not in contact with the shrimp.

DH's allergy is fairly mild so we don't worry too much (if he takes a bite of something by accident, he is usually okay - just some mouth tingling).

I have a severe allergy to shrimp and have never had any problem at Ohana. I make sure that I tell the server as soon as we are seated and they are very accomodating. I dont think this is a rare request since shrimp and shellfish allergies are some of the most common. If you are concerned and would like to have a back up plan carry some Benadryl or generic Diphenhydramine with you, 2 pills orally will stop almost any type of allergic reaction.

Thank you for your suggestions...

Looks like O'hana's may still be a possibility. If not, we'll just do it on another trip.

I'll probably leave the decision up to my FIL. Whatever he feels most comfortable with.
