The Monkey Bars won!


Last night Caitlyn fell off the monkey bars at the park and fractured both bones in her forearm. Looks like she will be in a cast for 4-6 weeks... they are casting her arm on Thursday.

She has taken it really well... but I have yet to tell her that a cast = No Swimming.

I am so sorry. This happened to a friend's son. He was so miserable with that cast on in the summer. Hope she feels better soon, and the cast is off before WDW.

Hey Robin, there was a thread a while back about something you can buy that fits over the cast and keeps water out so that kids with casts can go swimming. You might want to do a search on the community board.

I sure hope Caitlyn recovers quickly though and isn't in too much pain. My dd Ashli broke her arm playing outside when she was about a year older than Caitlyn. After the dr. cut the cast off Ashli kept it and played with it for a year or so. Friends got used to running into us in the store and Ashli having her arm 'broken' again, lol.

I broke both my forearm bones when I was 20, falling off the ledge of my parents above ground pool. I ended up in surgery, 2 plates, 12 screws.

I feel her pain, poor kid.

Last summer at the pool, we had a kid swimming in a cast. His mom said it was made for swimming?!?!

They do have casts made for swimming -- one of my College Program friends was a lifeguard at the Contemporary, and he got one when he broke his wrist during the CP.

I'll ask him what kind of cast it was.

Edited to add that it wasn't a cast made for swimming, I was wrong. It was a XeroSox cast cover, andyou can find more information about them here.

You can, however, get casts made that are safe for the water. They'll be lined with gore-tex instead of cotton -- there's more information here (which says that it could only cost $20-30 more than a traditional cast), and

Either way, I hope your daughter gets better soon! It seems like my friends always broke things at the beginning of summer, too. It's not fun, but she'll be all right.

Poor Caitlyn, and poor Robin. I hope it's not the hand she writes with. Kelsea has had such a hard time trying to write with her left hand, she's getting better though.

Yikes!! I bet she's in alot of pain. Hopefully when it's set, the pain will start subsiding.

They do make waterproof casts. They are more expensive than the regular kind and insurance doesn't usually cover the additional cost. But, depending on your situation, it might be something to soften the need for it.

You can however get a regular (not the plaster one) cast wet, as long as there is no open wounds. You can use a blow dryer to dry it. I have been in a cast (foot) off and on for the last 6 years. The cast covers they make for them work really well also and are not that expensive.

Good Luck and I'm sure she will still have fun even if she can't go swimming.
Just a thought, but if she will have the cast on when you go to WDW maybe she could have some characters sign it for her. Would make a unique keepsake.

Poor Caitlyn. My ds broke his arm last fall (his swingset won), and he had a waterproof cast. The dr actually recommended he go swimming if he could to help keep the cast from itching him. We don't have a pool and none of the local pools are open that time of year (late September, early October, I think). See if you can get the waterproof cast (it's made out of fiberglass). My ds loved his cast. He keeps telling me he can't wait to break another bone. I tell him he confirms what I have known all my life- boys are weird. He says he likes being weird.

I hope her arm gets to feeling better.

I don't like those monkey bars! Last year in kindergarten, my daredevil dd would be on top of them hanging by her feet. I just knew I would get a phone cally saying she broke her arm. Luckily, I never did. (Now kickball is her life, thank goodness) About a month ago a little girl at afterschool care fell off them and broke her arm.
