I want to adopt him! Been following him for a while ( long story, my DS loves Red Bull and follows who they sponsor, and they did a gig w/Shaun White) anyway...got to following him and any time I have ever seen or heard him, he is so genuine and good natured. Just watched him on Oprah and he said his favorite part after a run is when he gets a hug from his family :lovestruc:worship: Just love following this guy. Funny, as I am from Naperville and all the talk is about Evan Lysacek the guy who won gold for figure skating, and that guy has always had the opposite effect on me, just kind of blah, generic. I am still wondering how he won without a quad.:confused3 Anyway, just think the world of Shaun White and so happy he represents the U.S.A.!

YEP! Shaun definitely rocks!

However, so does Evan Lysacek. And he won without a quad because he performed a much cleaner program. He landed every jump perfectly, while Evgeni did not. He also did many more difficult jumps at the end of his program, when the skater is tired and so earned bonus points for that. Just doing the quad wasn't enough. It had to be perfect, and so did the rest of your performance. Evan's program was better thought out as to how to make up the difference in points for not doing a quad.

yeah, the commentators were saying about how Evan had his jumps at the end as well, but the guy just has no personality on the ice or off ( to me anyway)and we have had him in our faces a LOT! The skater who took bronze, I enjoyed him the most. I think EL won in part due to his competition, not really his performance, but that is how it is for every athlete.

What I think is cool about him is that, yes he won medals, but even more interestingly, he has essentially created a sport that is even in the olympics, KWIM?

yep...and he stays true to it. We need more Shaun Whites in the world. :goodvibes

I love him too!! He's extremely funny, cool, and charming when I see him on talk shows. Now HE is the kind of sports hero I'd love to see kids look up to!

Yep, what I love best about him is that he is who he is. No airs, no pretentiousness--just a kid who loves to snowboard and is willing to do the work that it takes to be the best.

I don't remember hearing about him before these Olympics, but so glad I got his performance. I'm so glad I caught it and his reactions afterwards. He is so engaging. Good for him.

He is a true original.

I LOVE his hair, his exuberance, his attitude.

Did you see him playing "air guitar" to the Star Spangled Banner at his awards ceremony? Pure Shaun White! :goodvibes

Shaun White's joy is infectious, he just seems to love life so much. I must admit, I wish I could be more like him and have that much exuberance.

OT - One of my favorite "Olympians" (yeah, I know they're plural but they compete as a singular unit) is the Chinese figure-skating pair of Shen-Zhao. NBC did a profile of them early on and they said something along the lines of (paraphrase) it didn't matter if they won or not, it was all worth it. I swear, that touched me so deeply. I tried to find that particular interview or profile, but I can't find it now. If anyone knows the link, please post it in this thread.

agnes!

ITA. As I said to my 15 year old DD last night, Shaun White is living proof that you can be ultra cool without being trouble. He is someone who makes a great role model.

I think Shaun White rocks. He's one of those personalities you just want to hang with, and Im in my 40's! He seems like just a nice guy.

While on the other hand, Seth Wescott who won the Snowboard cross, seems like a self absorbed jerk to me.

Agree. It was great to watch.

I've seen his medal winning half pipe run about 20 times! Can't get enough.

I love Shaun White!

I have watched him since the Torino games. I still think of him as "the flying tomato" even though it's passé to call him that. I heard his new nickname is Animal (after the Muppet's character).

I love him and his style. He just seems so full of life and joy! :goodvibes
