You use fins for the first two stops, but not at Stingray City. You don't have anything rubber (including the floatation vest), because it can damage the ray's skin.
While we were on Capt. Marvins excursion in September (had Capt. Marvin himself), all day excursion, saw a "small" shark out near Stingray City.
Eric (Capt. Marvin's first mate), told us that last year there was quite a large shark lurking out at Stingray City and it was keeping the rays away. He said Capt. Marvin took care of the shark and alot of people got upset with him over doing away with the shark. This is all just what we were told and I dont know if its true or not
I will say that Capt. Marvins is incredible and I highly recommend them, it was such an incredible day.
I've been snorkeling off the adult beach on Castaway Cay and got a picture of a shark. It made me a little nervous when I realized that I was maybe 100 yards from shore and a shark had just swam about 40 feet out in front of me.
But I also kept my cool because I knew the shark was going to be uninterested in me as others have said.
But the basic fact with these snorkel excursions is that you are in open water, and its possible that you might encounter any of the animals that swim near the ocean surface. Castaway Cay even has several signs on the island effectively warning you of the fact that wildlife inhabits the water around the island.
Consider your self lucky if you get the opportunity to see a shark as I did.
They were pulling out 4'leopard sharks off the pier in Huntington Beach at the beginning of October. I guess they are everywhere-didn't seem to bother (or be bothered by) all the surfers.
