Funny how a search for "sharks" turns up no hits. I would have thought the question would have been asked by now. Anyway, we will be snorkling at Castaway Cay (Seahorse Catamaran Snorkel Adventure). I was wondering if there is any concern with sharks and if not, how do they prevent them from being a problem?

Thanks,

Jeff

No, no concerns at all. There is a natural barrier that protects the island from larger sea life and I believe DCL has installed some netting as well. You may see some stingrays and you will almost certainly see jellyfish, but no sharks. We've been there 4 times, swam, snorkeled, rode the banana boat and we've never seen one.

Actually the Seahorse snorkel takes you out from the island and away from the nets. I still don't think you have to worry about sharks as there is always at least one crew member on the catamaran and I'm sure they are keeping a look out.

They have been seen at Serenity Bay,since there's no nets or barrier of any kind on that side. From what I understand they aren't large and they pretty much stay clear of people. Just don't wear anything shiny, stay away from the murky water and you should be alright. There is a resident Barracuda named Barry that likes to hang around the family beach snorkeling area. The life guards are usually really good about spotting him. He really likes the shiny stuff! ;)

CC is NOT shark free. The protected cove is netted and does not allow large fish or sharks in. But small (harmless) sand sharks are there. I have seen sand sharks up to about a foot in the snorkel area, near the shore line. Serenity Bay is open water. Sharks of a couple feet have been seen there.

Please keep in mind most sharks are harmless and pose no danger to you.:thumbsup2 I have been an open water diver for 22+ years and have encountered sharks of many types and never had a threatening encounter. Like the first rule about snakes, if you can't identify it, do not pick it up. Like wise with sharks if you can"t identify it get out of the water. Remember its their ocean and you are the guest.

I was trying to photograph one at CC on 28 Sept. He wasn't that big... about 4ft. And the week before there were 3 sting rays in the same location at Serniety Bay.

We just kayaked at CC last Tuesday, the 9th. We saw a few 2' sharks! We also saw a few starfish and some stingrays. We got a really neat sea biscuit!

I went on the fishing excursion at CC in Aug. '07 with my DS. the first thing I hooked was a shark about 4 ft. He bit off the hook. My DS did reel in a 3 ft.
16 lbs baraccuda. The captain of the fishing boat took it home for dinner.

Just got back yesterday. On saturday at Castaway Cay my Brother caught a 7' foot shark on the fishing excursion. They were on the outside of the nets but within sight of the family beach. They hooked several other sharks but were unable to get them to the boat.

:scared1: Oh....my.....God!!!

a few months ago some one posted a underwater photo of a shark in Serenity Bay. I beleive it was a sand shark and about 2 or 3 feet long.

Was at CC 2 weeks ago and saw a sand shark at Serenity Bay as well as 2 StingRays.

As you walk from the dock area to the beaches there is a rather large and carefully worded warning sign informing you of possible encounters with sharks, sting rays, jelly fish, sea lice as well as other vermin.

Sea Lice.... Oh what fun! :dance3:
