Hi there,

The worst thing my brother ever did to me was to take to to see the film "Jaws" back in 1977. Although I have tried to be very rational about this I would be far happier too know that the snorkeling area is netted.

I have managed to snorkle before in Puerto Rico but had a very close encounter with a barracuda.

Rest assured the family beach does have the nets and they won't let you out if there is something wrong with them. We were on the 12/18 cruise and there was a storm that came through the night before our CC stop. The nets got damaged and they closed the waters for the day (which was ok because it was too cool and overcast to really enjoying swimming). I believe one or more of the guards check the nets/lagoon area before the ship gets there.

As UGAfan said - there is no net on the adult beach.

:rotfl2: I feel the same thing. I love the clear waters of the caribbean but I hate our east coast water. If something is going to get me it would not matter about the color of the water. :rotfl:

We snorkeled a few years ago in the Bahamas and when the sting ray went under me I walked on the water to get to the boat. :sad2: I am sad I know. DH had a ball with it though. But I do still love CC and I love to get in the ocean as long as I can see what is in there with me.

Okay...I'm as easily spooked as all of you but I came up with this little "psychological" trick to enjoy snorkeling. Once I put the mask on, I feel like I'm looking through a little window, therefore, I'm safe! I know this sounds truly whacko but it worked for me. Snorkeling in Cozumel, there was a barracuda down below, snorkeling in CC, there was a wild stingray down below...but I was protected because I was inside my little window! Now, mind you, I had gone in with the stingrays at Stingray City and was in my glory once I conquered the initial fear. Just pretend they're puppies!!! Please don't call the authorities...I'm serious. It works!

I am fine as long as it is netted. Stingrays do not bother me, what spooked me was that I thought sharks eat sting rays. So I was so out of there. I still swim in the Ocean reguarless of nets but I normally only get in clear water.

When we were snorkeling the trail in 2002, my DH and DD's friend spotted a 5 ft Reef Shark along with the snorkelers on the inside of the net. It's the ocean, obviously things can and do get in from time to time. DH told a CM who acted either like he didn't believe him or didn't care. That was the end of snorkelling for day. :scared1:

I hate to give you the bad news, but there are at least 2 barrcudas in the netted area at Castaway. My eyes nearly popped out of my head when I saw one--the lifeguard told me that there are a few and that they sometimes are a little "too friendly." I did watch a film on snorkeling safety--I'd recommend it.

Lifeguard said that they got in while they were young and grew up in the snorkel area. Also said that they've never had any problems.

Oh yeah I have seen one of them. He looked very interesting. LOL

Just to let you know,

I do not mind the odd barracuda or reef shark, the first shark I every met up close was a 7ft shark which my dad had caught and kept in the bath, till the fishmonger collected it, so I don't like them but am happier without them. Hell, last year I ran convoys in Iraq and found that to be ok, so what the hell.

my mom and i were in the family waters and we had a stingray glide by our feet back in 2003. all i could feel was this rush or water and kind of a whipping of the sand. other than that i saw nothing and that stingray was good enough for me!
