Sharing death notices on facebook??

My first reaction was that it was in poor taste, but after reading the responses and rethinking about it I suppose Facebook is the best way to get news out. There might have been some people who were overlooked and may have never known until much later.

My brother passed away a couple of years ago (diabetes) and we put it all over Facebook. It is the quickest way to let people know about the viewing/funeral and so much easier than having to call EVERYONE. Of course, we personally told close family and friends, but for everyone else, FB was the best option. Most of our family posted my brother's pic as their profile pic for awhile, and I still do it on his birthday and on the anniversary of his death.

I agree. After seeing the reasons other people do it I guess I get it now. Just wasn't what I was expecting when I signed on yesterday.

When my father passed away in January, after all of the immediate family/friends were notified, I posted a wall post about him passing. The next day, when his obituary was in the paper, I "shared" it on my facebook wall. My friends from high school and college were not aware of his lung cancer before he passed - I was never able to bring myself to write it in a "public" forum of my private page. It was easier for me to share the information that way, in a one-shot deal. I was so thankful for the words of support and encouragement that I had received from everyone, in person and via facebook.

EDIT TO ADD: By posting his obituary on my page, it allowed friends/family outside of the newspaper region to read it if they wanted to. It is not always easy to know what newspaper published the obituary.

I am pregnant and plan to do something similar once Little Dude is born - share the information with immediate friends/family via phone calls but will post the information online for everyone else.

I think it's fine too, especially since it's already in the newspaper. It's not like it's a secret.

Now annoucing someone's death on FB before all family members have been notified is a big no-no in my opinion. A cousin of mine did that, as soon as her father died she got on FB and announced it. Granted she was probably in shock but we all were in shock reading it. Especially her siblings, that is how they found out. But in this case, where people already know your grandmother in-law has passed, then I think sharing the obit is actually nice.

It's in the newspaper (I assume), why not among friends on Facebook? I use FB as a communication tool. This is information that should be communicated.

If I die...by all means, let people know. I can't see how it would matter, but maybe I'm not sensitive enough.

I agree with this.

Posting the information on FB is an effective means of communicating this information to the people who want/need it. Honestly, it's LESS public than publishing it in the newspaper, and the newspaper is probably putting it on their website, too.

When my Dad passed away, we all posted his obit on our facebook pages. It saved us a lot of time making tons of phone calls (there were still a lot we had to make to peole who don't do FB), and it was emotionally easier, too.

I had a number of people who came up to us at the funeral that told us they were happy we shared it on FB because they might have missed it otherwise...not as many people get the newspaper these days as in the past, and not everyone is local.
