Shared private dessert party

Has anyone ever planned or participated in a private dessert party with people who were not relatives? I'd love to do an Illuminations dessert party, especially since 9pm is late for my grade-schoolers to just sit and wait for fireworks, but I've read bad reviews about the official dessert party at Epcot. The private events through the catering company seem great, however, and might not cost much more per person if you had a larger group. Which leads me to wonder why I'm not seeing postings for "shared"/"co-op" dessert parties. I know the organizer would take on a bit of risk, but it IS Disney...

Any thoughts?

My advice is go to Disney Meets Board and and look for Illuminations meets and see if you can join their group. Or start thread and see if you can start your own.

March 2014 I hosted a private dessert party at the Norway spot for 13 of my family members. It was wonderful and the total cost was cheaper than going to the dessert party would have been. We had a very simple set up though. A sundae bar, sodas, ice tea, and coffee. The view was amazing and Norway is a smaller location so you can use it with fewer people. I have never got a group together but I think it is something worth looking into.
