Ugh. Tonight is grade school graduation, and they've prepared a slide show using baby pictures. Plus, they've added a bunch of sappy, sad songs. You can't add those to baby pics-they're bad enough! I saw abotu 3 seconds of it when I picked up ds today and was tearing up. What do you do to stop yourslef from crying? I'm not a pretty cryer, either. My eyes well up and my face immediately turns red!:rotfl2:

I'm a crier, too, over everything. Heck, I even cry watching WDW commercials, lol! Don't know if this will work for you, but someone taught me long ago to look up at the ceiling when I feel like crying. Don't know why it helps, but it does. Good luck tonight, and bring tissues!!

Deep breathing through the mouth.

Not that it's going to help me - our slide show is next week. Good luck!

Pretty much .....ummm...don't go?

I am soooooooooooo the wrong person to give advice on this one

Good luck and ENJOY! And it's OK to tear up!

I just wish I could "movie cry." You know, look beautiful while tears roll silently down my face, leaving my makeup unscathed!:rotfl2: Thanks for the tips. I am sure I'll be bawling. Let's place bets on the songs included. I know "Wind Beneath My Wings" is on there. How about "Raise You Up" by Groban and the infamous "Butterfly Kisses." Ooh, "I Hope You Dance"!

I'm tearing up just reading this thread! :o

Try to sit in the back, maybe they will keep the lights off :)

I'm just immune. I don't have any special tips, I'm just not a crier.

I will be right with you on Friday for DD's awards/graduation ceremony. I know that the chorus (Dd is in) is singing "For Good" from Wicked and then a slide show set to music...I don't stand a chance! :rotfl:

Bite the inside of your mouth. As long as you don't bite through or cause blood, you should be good. I'm a crier and it works for me.

Or, don't wear mascara or under-the-eye liner. Just do the top lid. This helps make the "movie-cry" work.

I have one year to learn the skill that you speak of - my DD will be graduating. I'm going to need Valium.

I'm sure I'll just go with it and sob wildly...

I don't have any anti-crying advice to share. I just bring a big old box of Kleenex and let the tears fall where they may.:goodvibes (We just finished up HS graduation here--I bought my tissues at Costco!)

All I have is to bite my lower lip, pick at my nails, and avoid eye contact with anyone at all costs!! For some reason, eye contact does me in, and makes it impossible to not cry!

Sunglasses and waterproof mascara. I just cry. I have skipped a couple funerals because of my crying, funerals where everyone was putting on a brave face due to unusual circumstances. I cried during my own wedding, had to tell my mother NOT to make eye contact, lol! My DH took my hand and tickeled the palm, then started making subtle but definite goofy faces to keep me sensible. It worked. He's a good man!

Sorry, no help here. My ds is graduating high school on Thursday and dh told me he doesn't want to sit anywhere near me LOL.

"For Good" was in it! The kids had learned it in chorus, so they all sang along!

But what can I do to stop my face from becoming immediately blotchy!?!

I like to count things like ceiling tiles, chairs, etc. I also mentally list an alphabet of things like movies, foods, or animals.

I did okay at my wedding, but I really had to try. I was willing gravity not to let those tears fall from my eyes. They were so watered up! The worst part was hearing a sob from one of my bridesmaids.

Good luck! I'll be a complete mess!

But not by tilting your head up and actually looking at it. Instead, face straight ahead but roll your eyes upwards. Another tip: squeeze the bridge of your nose, directly between your eyes.

I used to know why these (should ;)) work, but I've forgotten.

Okay, I'm back. I did a little eye-dabbing, but it wasn't too bad. Dh, dd, my sister, and my mom were there, so I had enough distractions so I couldn't focus on one thing. I also video taped it, so that kept me slightly distracted. Other peoples' kids were cute, and some of the songs weren't TOO bad, so I wasn't worked up by the time ds's rolled around. He was just the cutest baby ever...sigh...:lovestruc

I'm not exactly the person to give advice! I tend to either bite my lip or look around the room and fixate on something....count windows, look for patterns of whatever. :rotfl: Takes my mind away from what's happening for a minute.

Tomorrow I have my son's baseball banquet....he's a senior and will be done playing baseball (he's been playing since he was 4yo), on Friday his high school graduation, and later this month will be my 5th graders "clap out". With the exception of one year, we've been at the elementary school since 1991, so will be hard to leave it.

I am a major cryer. I just let the tears come- I figure in situations like that, I won't be the only one. I am pretty good at the silent tears after years of getting made fun of by family and friends. And I always carry tissues in my purse, because I could bust out in tears any time, anywhere.
