My daughters hair is always a tangled mess. I try to brush it 3 times a day, but it is tangled each time. It is really worse than tangles. It gets to where it almost looks like it is matted. It is sooo hard to get the tangles out.
My DD has severe eczema and I have been using California Baby shampoo and conditioner. I am now thinking I am going to have to find something that works or chop her hair off. I love how pretty it looks when it is not all tangled up! I try to keep it braided, but it still tangles. I don't get it! She is my only child, so I am clueless if there is some miracle stuff out there that will work. It can't be anything fruity smelling though because then she will break out on her scalp.

Gosh,

I feel your pain. I am an adult now, but I have always had THICK fine hair that will tangle at the drop of a hat and my mother INSISTED on keeping it long.

I suggest trying 'Bumble and Bumble TONIC shampoo' which is expensive, but it has tea tree oil and sooths the scalp.

I read my bottle and it doesn't say anything about not using it on children.

I have fine hair and I tried "Wen" and it really works! It's a little expensive, so I don't know if I'll keep using it, I just liked how soft and manageable my hair was, and the fact that it didn't weigh it down. Sounds like your daughter would really benefit from it, though. You can buy it on QVC or they always seem to have an infomercial on. Other than that, I would call your salon to ask what they recommend.

I have fine hair as well and like Pantene Beautiful Lengths. I have also found that I need conditioner since I let my hair grow out.

Are you using a thick conditioner on her? Tangles are usually when someone doesn't use a good conditioner that coats the hair. Sounds like she needs to move to an adult formula. Try Pantene for both the shampoo & the conditioner. It's full of "cones". She needs products that have a lot of silicones in the ingredients. You can tell when you read the label and the ingredients end with "-cone".

My all time favorite conditioner is Charles Worthington's: Moisture Seal. I get it from Rite Aid. It is so thick and moisturizing. It really coats the hair. I also smooth on a little bit after I've rinsed out the conditioner, and before combing out my hair. I pour a little onto my palms, rub the hands together, them run them through my hair, and really work it into the strands. It works as a leave-in conditioner, (no rinsing) rather than buying a separate (expensive) product. It works great, as I can smooth on as much as I need.

To this day I hate to have someone else handle my hair because it was so painful when my mother used to try and brush my fine hair and it was never longer than my chin ... One thing I learned, just like a long haired dog, ALWAYS get the tangles out before you wash the hair, then wash gently, try not to swirl the hair too much, always use some kind of conditioner, I like the spray leave-in by Pantene because it is light and helps with combing the hair, it can also be used on dry hair ... a conditioner will help to smooth the shaft so that the strands don't mesh and tangle ....

Thank you. The stuff I am using now is about 12 dollars for 8 ounces. I think it is way too expensive, but it is the best I have found so far. Tea tree would be great! I'm going to look into where I can get some.

My salon recommended I chop all her hair off of course!
I had thought about getting Wen, but was worried it might have too much fru fru scent stuff in it. I wish I could get some kind of sample before having to buy a big bottle of it. Good to know it actually works though. I guess I could use it on myself if it makes Hannah break out.

Something in Pantene makes her eczema go crazy. Wish I could figure out what that ingredient is so I could narrow it down by just looking at the ingredients.

The Califorinia baby stuff is very thick. I have a hard time getting it out of her hair. It definitely doesn't have any "cones" in it. Everything in it is all natural. I will look into the Moisture Seal.. that sounds promising.. as long as it is unscented.

Thanks for the tips about the tangles before you wash. I didn't know that.
She is already hating everytime she sees a brush or hears the word. Poor thing! I feel so bad everytime I have to detangle her hair. I slather on the conditioner and still have trouble getting the tangles out.

Is that her in your siggie? I didn't notice it before. She's gorgeous! I can see why you want to keep her hair long.

You also don't need to use a conditioenr all the way to her scalp. You can put it on a little lower, if that would stop it from irritating her scalp.

In addition to detangling before washing, maybe washing her hair in the shower would help. this way, her hair is straight down all the time. Also make sure you do the last rinse from the top of her head, so that it flows straight down.

When you comb/brush out her hair start from the ends and work your way up. This way, you get the tangles out of the bottom first, then work your way up to the next one. If you start at the top, you push all the tangle together in one big bird's nest in the middle or at the bottom. :headache:

Also, have you tried a wide toothed comb? The brush may be aggravating the problem.

My girls have hair that tangles easily. I use Suave Sleek conditioner, in the orange bottle, and just put it on the last few inches of their hair. Then I comb with a wide tooth comb, then I rinse by pouring water from scalp down their backs. I will gather the hair into a "ponytail" in my hand and comb that so the conditioner doesn't get all over. I also use detangling cream on their hair, again, just on the ends. If it irritates your DDs back (touching or running down it when rinsing) you could try rinsing while having her sit on the edge of the tub, with her hair haning into the tub and rinse away from her body while she is wrapped in a towel.

DS is the one here with eczema the worst, but both girls have super sensitive skin so I try to keep all of that stuff off their skin.

Yes, that is her in the picture! Thank you! I give her a bath in the tub, but use the shower head to wet her hair and rinse it off. She still hates that part, but a cup of water does not work at all! She has tubes in her ears, so I can't make her dunk her head. I am not doing the rinse from the top thing though. Right now I use the conditioner on her scalp because she gets tangles there too. The conditioner I use does nothing to her scalp, so I never worried about it. I have tried using that detangling stuff you can buy with her out of the shower just on the lower part of her hair. I even put a towel on her back. She still broke out in her eczema rash. I have not tried a wide toothed comb either. I am going to try all this out. Glad to know that I don't have to chop it all off.

Never would have thought about combing it right after the conditioner is in and then rinsing. That makes sense. My tub isn't made in a way that she can sit on the edge, so I can't do that. I might be able to get her to hold her head over it though. I will try. Thank you for your help.
