Excellent point! Thanks.philaround said:I know that the "dead fish" hand shake is disturbing BUT I just chalk it up to a physical impairment. Many people are unable to give a firm handshake due to a physical condition that may cause extreme pain under pressure or they may be physically unable to close their hand enough to apply sufficient pressure. I don't just assume that they could give me a proper handshake if they desired.
Point well taken, however, I know of one person that always gives the dead fish, but at times, I have found that if I turn my hand just right and "get in there" he will give me a regular handshake. I knew he could do it!philaround said:I know that the "dead fish" hand shake is disturbing BUT I just chalk it up to a physical impairment. Mal, it's ok, I'd give you aMaleficent13 said:Well, I admit, I am someone who doesn't shake well. I try to avoid it whenever I can. Trust me, you don't WANT our palms to touch...my palms are a sweaty mess most of the time, especially if I'm nervous. On job interviews I clutch a paper towel in the waiting area until they call me so I can shake hands properly.![]()

). Then as he left after he offered his hand to me! Uummm...no thanks! I just smiled politelyand said "Oh sorry, I'm sure you'll understand, I refrain from handshakes once the cold/flu season is upon us! It was a pleasure to meet with you though."

My uncle told me this story of this guy he met one time, (this was like late 80s) and he went to shake the guys hand, and right as he touched the guys hand the guy did the 'ladies handshake" with just his finger tips. My uncle was talking to the guy that introduced the two of them later and he asked him about it. The guy said that the other guy had been in an accident and REALLY messed up the bones in that hand. so that was all he could do. Once he went to shake his hand and was too fast, and he nearly brought tears to his eyes. So its not always a "I don't like shaking hands" it can sometimes be a "I can't shake hands"NHAnn said:Sometimes I'd rather have no handshake at all !![]()
I meet with individuals clients in an office setting. Recently a man came in gave a big cough and sneeze, lityerally all over the desk, as he sat down. He continued to do so repeatedly during our 30 minutes or so meeting (I offered him my box of tissues after the first one...the tissue box is next to my dispenser of Purell). Then as he left after he offered his hand to me! Uummm...no thanks! I just smiled politelyand said "Oh sorry, I'm sure you'll understand, I refrain from handshakes once the cold/flu season is upon us! It was a pleasure to meet with you though."
