_pretty_pixie,

I'm retired AF and have stayed at SOG about a dozen times over the past 2 years. It's an incredible (for the price) resort just a couple of hundred yards across the street from the Poly resort, situated between golf courses. I've only stayed in the new wing and to me it's comparable to the deluxe Disney resorts...inside hallway room access, on-site restaurants, bus service to parks (although the buses are not Disney-operated, they are a private contractor), in-room safes, in-room refreigerators (the small, undercounter type), balconies or patios. The best part is the small exchange facility in the resort! The facility is beautiful. I was completely impressed, not at all what I was expecting from a MWR operation.

I'll be staying there on 2 Nov before getting on the 3 Nov Wonder cruise.

Thanks so much! Unfortunly my Mom is going to be deployed right when we go. She got her orders last night but she wants us to go anyway. It won't be the same without her. :guilty:

I understand what you mean about it not being the same without her. The timing of her deployment really stinks! Still, it will help her to know that you're having some fun at that time and maybe being at WDW will help you get past the first few days of her being gone. You'll have some great stuff to tell her about in letters and e-mails. Hope you'll have a great time, in spite of her not being there to share it with you.

If I can answer any questions for you about the resort, don't hesitate to post or pm me.

Thanks for the support. I hope we still have a good time. This will be her second deployment in this war, so this time we are ready for it. Hope your Bahamas trip is great can't wait to hear about it.

I am a 100% Disabled Vietnam Veteran and we have stayed at SOG four times now and have a few days in Dec to stay there (eight days overflow first at CSR) I hope I am wrong but you better check to see if you can get in without your Mom, I thought the person making ressies had to be present. I hope I am wrong, but give them a call and find out before hand. We love it there, the new section is right up there with any deluxe on proberty! Good luck and enjoy!! :earsgirl: :cool2: :jumping2:

I know that spouses can stay there without the sponser as long as they have proper id card, etc. Is your dad going? Also, the manager can wiave the requirements for special circumstances, and I think that a deployment is a good reason. Call and ask!

We are so excited to see the new SOG. My cousin actually laid the carpet and he said it is beautiful!

Wishing you a good time and know that your Mom will know you are having a good few days. Prayers for your family.

We spent a weekend there recently, and thought for the price it is the value of the century!

The only thing we missed were Disney touches, like there's no ambient music, and not a character or Mickey icon to be seen. Even the gift shop didn't have Disney stuff. That was kind of weird.

The pool area was nice, just wish they had a hot tub.

The room was huge by Disney resort standards. Very comfortable, and spotless.

We loved the close walk to the Polynesian.

Whenever we can't get a good deal on a Disney resort (we're spoiled AP holders used to getting 40% off rack rate, but those days may be gone!), we'll go to Shades of Green for short trips. For long trips, we have a friend with a rental villa in Clermont, with a private pool, that's even cheaper than SoG, when you rent by the week!

I have stayed at SOG twice this year. We love it.

Pretty Pixie- My husband just left for his deployment on Sunday. The kids and I will be going to SOG for the 1st time without him in January. He really wants us to go but I know how you feel, it just wont be the same. If you want someone to talk to just PM me.

Called resort as soon as I found out about her being deployed and they told me that as long as we had a military ID card for her sixteen year old that we would still be aloud to stay. I think I will double check to make sure. They also told us to bring a copy of her orders. Thank you for the heads up!

This is really great! To be in contact with other Military familys who love Disney is very cool! Thank you for all of your conserns. My father has already been deployed so no he will not be going with us but my mothers brother will be. When I called the resort they told me that my 16 year old sister can act as our sponsor in my mother place but only if she has a military ID, they also told us to bring a copy of my mom's order just in case. I will call again and talk to manager just to be sure. I really hope I don't have any problems. OH!!!!!! Last night my mom found out that she will not be deployed at the end of this week but some time later! Very happy! Hope she will be able to put it off as long as possible. :cool1:

Glad things are going well for your trip! Great news that your mom's deployment has been delayed! You're right to follow-up again with SOG managment...you might ask them to annotate your situation on their records so when you get there whoever is working the reception desk will know what the situation is.

Have a great vacation!

That fact that there is no themeing or anything Disney is a strong point for us. After 14 days of Disney, Universal, Seaworld. I love the fact that things are toned down when we get back to the resort. During the day, you are blasted with all kinds of themeing and it is good to just be able to chill out! I always ask for the top floor and the golf course view. On a good morning or night sitting out on the balcony can't be beat! It reminds me of: I love the smell of napalm in the morning, it smells like.....victory! Alright that may be alittle heavy for a disney board, but to say the least, I really enjoy the quiet of the resort! :earsgirl: :smooth: :bounce:

I too enjoy that there is no theme in the SOG it is nice to come from a very nice but conventional hotel room to bright lights and colors of Disney it makes the parks that much more magical!

Well I called SOG to check about my using my sisters ID and they said it was fine I also asked if it was ok if my Aunt or Uncle came with us and they said it was fine. I had they make a note of it so that when we got there there should be no problem.

We love Shades of Green! We have not stayed in the older section so I don't know about it, but we love the new section. We were there this past March and booked 3 rooms(1 for us and our 2 little ones, and one for each set of grandparents). I also love the fact that there is no Disney theme type stuff. It really does make it more special getting to the parks.

Have a great trip! Keeping your mother in our thoughts!

We are currently planning our next trip and hoping that dh doesn't have to deploy during the time we want to go.

I have a res there in late Oct and was wondering if there is a certain part of Shades I should request-like is the newer part alot better than the older part or one part nicer? Thanks

we were there the beginning of Sept. We were on the 5th fl, which I think is the old section. I agree the rms were larger then the usual Disney resort and they sleep 5. We also brought an air mattress that my dd, the kicker, slept on. Each rm had a balcony, refrig, coffe pot, iron. Bring filters for the coffe pot, they give you the coffee-already-in-a-filter stuff so you can't make tea or anything else using their filters. I think the new section, depending on your rms, is closer to the garage, pool, and one of the restaurants. The older section is closer to the front desk, BX, and Evergreen's buffet and Mangino's restaurant.

We got the meal plan at check-in. I wouldn't do it again unless I had young kids that would need naps or no kids with me. The price was good, but it felt like we were constantly choosing between meals or catching the bus.

It's definately walking distance from the Poly, especially if you catch the Shady Shuttle, a golf cart that they use to take you to the rd between Poly and SOG. They will give you a phone # so you can call them to meet you for the ride back. Depending on how late you're out, you might end up carrying the 5 yr old. My dd's are 6 and one whinned about the walk, the other was fine.

The only problem we had with the entire stay was the buses. Seems the boss is off on wkends and some of the drivers take advantage. Betty runs the program, any problems at all ask for her, she'll definately take care of it. One bus runs every 15 min to TTC, the others all run every hr. THe problem is remembering which one leaves on the hr, the 1/2 hr, 20 of, etc. It was an inconvenience but it wouldn't have been so bad if we didn't have the SOG dining plan, without it, eating in parks, I don't think it would be much of a problem.
