Prior to going on vacation, has anyone thought to check your hotels address on the family watchdog site for sex offenders that live in the hotel? I wouldn't have thought to either. I live on Long Island and there are two chain hotels I know of (Best Western and Extended Stay America) that house these people. So just a heads up to check before you travel because you could be sleeping next door to a convicted rapist.

Also, sex offenders live with other family members. Next time you send your kid to a birthday party at someone's house, check the address. There was one DISer on here who found this out the hard way. Forgot her name but she immediately picked her kid up after dropping her off.

Honestly? I think that while it is a good thing to be aware of your surroundings, you are never going to be 100% safe, free from pedophiles, etc. Just walking down the street, or going to the mall, you probably come into contact with sex offenders. Does this mean they steal your children? No. There is just no way to completely avoid it. So the best thing you can do is just be alert, watch your children, and teach them about stranger danger.

I was just told that this happens and its usually the smaller non-franchise hotels that do it to supplement their income.

Sorry I don't have to vet every person who might be within 1 mile so me. I have never looked and never will.

I check the county's website so that I am aware, I don't see what is so wrong with checking to see if any sex offenders are residing in a hotel that you and your children will be staying at, that is doing the best thing so you can be alert, and watch your children and tell them. I do it for my kids, I don't need to prove some point that I don't need to check everyone within a mile of me.

many also list thier address as homeless to avoid having to update thier "new" address.

Remember, just because a webiste does not show someone living in a hotel you are staying in, doesn't mean that the hotel does not have sex offenders, drug dealers, murderers, etc staying there. A hotel rents to anyone who can pay, they do not do background checks or anything else. Don't lull yourself into a false sense of security just because there is not one listed on a website. The fact of the matter is there could be bad people anywhere, and we have to watch our children and teach them how to protect themselves if we are out of site. :thumbsup2

Hey, just making ya'll aware. I know I wasn't until I read about it on another site. I personally would not frequent a hotel that houses them. If you want to, so be it :)

That is scary about the bday party thing! Didn't even think to check that!

Summer I am like you and check the national registry for the county I live in, but I never thought of hotels! That is scary. Just found out that a guy I went to HS with is doing time for molestation. You would have NEVER guessed that he would do it, but he did.

Stupid question but can't they just go on vacation and rent any hotel anyway? I'm pretty sure disney didn't do a back round check on me when I was there.. do they have to tell hotels they are sex offenders when renting even for the night? what if the hotel room is in someone else:confused3s name does that person have to tell the hotel that someone in the room is a sex offender?

They still are supposed to have a permanent residence on file.
Looking at the county where I heard about this, it seems that the hotels will be required to pay an annual fee in order to house them and the sex offenders rating will determine what hotels they can live at.

I was told that the county uses (as in pays for) these hotels, but I don't know how accurate that info is.

They still are supposed to have a permanent residence on file. Some counties will pay these hotels to house sex offenders, they are not on vacation at those hotels, they are living there.

I understand that but the OP said she doesn't want to frequent a hotel that houses them.. I'm just wondering if that would be all hotels in a sense. Since if they go on vacation they could be next to her room and she'd have no way to know.. if this isn't making sense I'm sorry. I had a very long sleepless night :rotfl:

 ...about the birthday party thing. Wouldn't a private residence that houses a child sex offender be prohibited from having children there?

Never thought of hotels but it's certainly a good idea!

Like someone else mentioned, it's hard (and stressful!) to find every sex offender near you. Combined with doing your research and talking to your kids about strangers, hopefully everyone will stay safe!

I think that it is a good idea to check, you will never know about everyone but it doesn't hurt to be aware of the known location of offenders. When one of my daughters was 10 years old I found out that the father of a little girl in her class was a convicted sex offender by looking at the state registry of offenders online. My daughter had gone to two overnight parties at this girls house and I had never thought to check. I felt betrayed because other parents who lived near this family thought that the polite thing to do was to keep quiet about him. They kept their children away but just looked the other way instead of letting others know. I know that some of you will say this sounds mean to talk about this family but when it concerns my child my first duty is to protect her. I felt sorry for the little girl but my daughter would never have been allowed in the home of a sex offender. This incident might have been a little off topic but the lesson I learned is to always check available information.

Unfortunately, the sex offender lists are so large in many states and cover so many people they are rather useless.

What we need to know are where the sexual PREDATORS are, not where the guy is who slept with a 15 year old when he was 16 and got branded for life.

Perhaps, but to be allowed to have OTHER children in the home? Like for a birthday party? Seems to me that would likely be a violation.

I think you are right to question it. The registered sex offenders have to stay away from children. I'm not even sure they are allowed near children that live in the home.
