My 6 year old is asking for a sewing machine for Christmas (thank you Isabelle from American Girl) and all the reviews for the toy machines said they are junk and to just go ahead and get a real machine. I have been looking for weeks and I just pulled the trigger and bought a Janome 3/4 Hello Kitty machine on Overstock. It is $120 everywhere else plus tax and shipping. I paid $106 total with a 2 year replacement plan, no tax and shipping was free. Hope this helps someone else out.

I bought dd a Singer from Target when she was 7. It was their basic machine, but it does zig-zag, buttonholes, and more. Her grandmother has helped her sew some clothing and other items with it. It was less than $100, and she can use it well into adulthood.

I am a grownup, and I sew:rotfl: anyway, I bought a small, well built Brother brand machine on Amazon a few weeks back,it was a lightning deal and was about 58.00- I think it would work well for a first machine, and the model I got had a lot of good usage reviews. I've used it for a few things, and so far it works fine for basic sewing.
