Hi,
I enjoy dabbling in crafts... I've painted/stenciled some wood projects, designed some jewlery...

I've always wanted a sewing machine but never had one- something that is simple but not too basic. I keep reading reviews online and it seems nobody is happy with any of their "cheaper" models.

I was looking to spend around $100 up to $150 if it was worth it. I truthfully don't want to go higher than that for it to sit on a shelf when I get frustrated. ;)

Anything I should look for specifically? Anyone recommend a machine for that price?

I bought a Brother from Walmart. It was about $149, and does everything I could need it to do. I make clothes for small stuffed characters (10-11") and I use features such as zipper feet, button holes, finish edges, etc. I'm happy with this for the money. I'm sure I could have done better with a more expensive machine, but I didn't want to spend a lot of $ at this time.

Good luck!

but I wanted to be able to save some money and make my own designer overalls and pillowcase dresses for my little one. I bought a WHITE sewing machine that had all the stitches that I needed ... it came with a video tape how to for dummies (AKA ME!). So far -- so good. I don't think I would have been able to thread the machine without that tape. I think it was about $120 last year.
