Here's the deal: I'm looking to buy a sewing machine. I don't know whether to get a serger or a regular. I'll mostly be making clothes and costumes. Nothing really fancy but, but I want which one would be better. I want everything i want to done to get done as well. I'm afraid a serger wouldn't let me do everything. What's the best option? What's the best kind? Specifics are great. Thanks

I'm not that great at sewing, but my mom has had a Kenmore sewing machine since the early 1970s and loves it! She still sews with it regularly for clothes and costumes. I have a bare bones White machine and it works just fine. If you are considering doing more elaborate work than a serger might be the better choice. Have you read reviews on particular models of interest? That might help with your decision.

DW has several Bernina's both have computer interface and also do embrodery, etc., plus she has a serger and a really small portable singer.

My best guess would be for you to find several local stores and go in and try them out. A good store will also include lessons on whatever model they would sell you.

good luck.

Would you consider buying reconditioned and then getting both types of machines? Many places seem to sell them or have trade in sales.

I have an old Bernina (1970's) and know it in and out. was looking a few years ago to get a new one. went and tried a few, looked at Vikings- while they are great and $$$$, I would have had to take a few classes just to do basic sewing! that was what prevented me from buying one
I love my basic Bernine, it does alot- it can even do smocking (who remembers that!) I would go to a store like joann fabrics- they are having sales like everyone else and try a few and see what you like! that is the only way you will be happy with your new machine

A serger is mainly used to finish seams. You would not be able to produce clothing and costumes with only a serger. You would still need a sewing machine in order to do button holes, zippers, hems etc.

You can use a sewing machine to finish seams as well, but it is more labor intensive than with a serger. YOu would need to sew the seams, and then zig zag stitch them as well in order to prevent the fraying etc.

As a beginner I would suggest starting with a sewing machine and then if it is something you enjoy adding a serger into the mix.
