Share advice and ideas to plan for nasty weather

I monitor weather conditions closely. DH and I mapped out our evacuation route last night. Called insurance company and confirmed that I have hurricane insurance on the house. Since we don't live in a flood zone, it is important that we have it. Right now not many more plans have been made. According to NOAA, none of the forecast models has it threatening our coast. But, that is dependent upon her taking a NW turn. If she doesn't, we might be in the path. Since we live in a Navy town, I monitor their activity closely too. Last threat was four years ago with Floyd. The Navy started taking precautions. So if they start flying planes out and moving the ships out to sea, I will then start making my planes to hightail it out of here.

I grew up in New Orleans and went through Hurricane Betsy in 1965, among other hurricanes. Two weeks of no electricity, three weeks of no school and no telephone, but at least our house was still there, minimally damaged.

For hurricane preparations, besides evacuation plans, you also need a battery operated radio, fresh batteries, bottled water, nonperishable food, a manual can opener, some way to heat the food (charcoal grill outside, natural gas stove inside), candles and matches. It also helps if your house is built so that opening the windows allows breezes. Plywood to cover your windows with, or else crisscross them with duct tape (plywood is better but you have to be able to nail or screw it into the window frame). Some modern houses are built with hurrican shutters -- great invention! Also make sure the gas tank in your car is full! Now I know I've left something out....

I now have a backpack ready to go in case of tornado or flood warnings(I lived through the 4th of July weekend flood last summer).I also have a full tank of gas in my car along with cell phone and keys
