My doctor tells me I have osteoarthritis. They saw its in on my back, but I REALLY think its just on my LEFT hip.
Up until a week ago, it was very bearable, but the last couple of days, I have spurts of almost crippling pain. I did have a FALL about a week ago. Not looking where I was going, LOL It passes after a few minutes, when I walk a certain way. BENDING down for those few minutes is like being in *ell.

It happened TWICE, today. I have been talking my pain meds, hip patches and just dealing with the pain. We leave in 5 DAYS. AND I am a bit worried abut getting around at the parks. DD says just to stay at the hotel and the POOL. LOL.

I would like to TRY to get one of those electronic chairs, but at this last date, I doubt anyone has any. If I do get one, how does it work with the BUSES?

What d you think I should do?

Yes an ECV is probably best. They are really not too difficult to drive, but you will have to be constantly on your toes looking out for others, for they do not look out for you. You also have to be aware that the ECV does not stop immediately when you let off on the handle. They don't have brakes. The faster you are going the longer it is going to take for you to stop. It is best to keep it in the slower speeds when in the parks.

As far as the buses go it is not to bad to do. You stop close to where the rear of the bus would be when it stops and make sure that you signal that you want that bus. The driver will come and let you and the scooter on first. Depending on the bus, you may have to back onto a lift and then back into the spot on the bus. Some you can just drive on forward and then parallel park into the spot. The drivers will let you know which way you need to do this. Also remember that the buses can only carry 2 wheelchairs or ECV's on the bus, so you might have to wait for another bus to come before you get on.

Hi and :welcome: to disABILITIES!

I would suggest you go to Post #2 of the disABILITIES FAQs which covers mobility situations. You would be best off renting an ECV from an off-site location, so it will be available to you at all times. One of the things in Post #2 is a list of off-site vendors who charge reasonable prices (much lower than Disney's) and have good service.

As long as you give them at least a day's notice they will have an ECV waiting for you at your resort when you arrive.

You can get directly to the disABILITIES FAQs by clicking the link in my signature.

When I went in October 2008 I was stubborn and didn't believe that I would need one. I requested one from Care Medical, calling first thing in the morning after a miserable evening and I had one that afternoon. So, you should be able to get one even on short notice. :goodvibes

Off site rental is great. Try one of the types at stores to get around and play,
I used Randy's Mobility my first rental as they deliver, show me how to take apart and put togetner, drive and charge. I found an internet coupon for a week rental.

Sometimes I park it near a few attractions I would be at. The other thing on a short trip I used a Rollator, like a push cart, with a seat on it. Mine does not have the bar across, it is on Amazon for $99 blue and with white wheels.

Handles have hand breaks. Not so geratric looking but I can lean on it and sit too. Carry my small cooler and bag on the handles.
If you cannot get back to the rear of Walmart without dragging and standing in line is a killer, you need support at the park. Don't miss the action staying at the pool.

The buses, many now you can pull forward on not back up. Just take your time, don't worry about holding others up. Practice with it, zip around the grounds.

An ECV will keep you up with the family and make for a great trip.
If your asking if you need one, then you do.
It is a bit nervous at first, but especially Randy's, get you comfortable with the device.
Have a blast,
OH and ADVIL, I have degenertive hip and low back. ask you ortho, but as an anti inflamatory my dose is 4 of them, I also have a tens unit, BIOFREEZE!!!!!!!!!
I have lidoderm patches for the low back/hip and am leary of them in FL heat....

Drink fluids, your water mister bottle and wet wipes to cool off.

My DH has bad knees and has had surgeries on them and arthritis has settled in. He fell a couple of weeks ago and had the same crippling pains you are describing. He went to the doc's and they did an MRI. He has several disc's that have slipped and are pressing into his spine (and a torn rotator cuff in his left shoulder). The Ortho doc told him if he didn't come in, he would have eventually lost all use of his legs once the disc's sliced completely thru the spine. He has to have surgery going thru the back of his neck & thru the front. The second surgery cannot be done until he heals from the 1st.
Moral of my story is, go to the doc's and have your neck/back checked out since you have fallen. My DH just thought the pains were due to his knees....he actually only went to the doc for his arm... :scared1: His first surgery is scheduled for July 15th.

I have the same crippling pain so I understand. I can't go to Walmart anylonger as one of the posters mentioned.

Thanks for all of the info. in this thread.

Does your husband have fingers fall asleep, the ring and pinkie perhaps, the pain in the arm cause him inability to say, hang pictures, paint a wall, carry items, If he were to raise his arms over head in the stick em up type position, ; Bend at the elbows raise the arms and pull them back toward the wings cause them to power out and drop from the pain and numbness.

While holding them up don't let him relax them forward, that makes it feel better and take pressure off a site that may be compressed. Have him open and close the hands time how long he can actually preform this.

There are nevers that come off the spine, although I have left side cervical herniations, mainly my right arm and my head; cervogenic migraines were a problem.
THe cervical nerves C3,4,5,6,7 and T1 come off the neck spine area in a bundle. These nerve travel behind the collar bone, over the first rib. Then down into the arm, wrist and fingers. three feet long. They are the Radial, Ulnar and medial nerve.

The ulnar mainly the C/6/7 T1 is the pinkie finger side, the medial the center and radial the thumb.

This area behind the collar bone and first rib is very small, if the cervical nerves suffer a stretch injury, as a catch in a fall, a whiplash, sports injuries or REPETATIVE STRAIN as in typing and data entry all day it is more the carpal tunnel or ulnar tunnel it could be a Brachial Plexus entrapment. THe inflamed nerves are being compressed with the hand/arm movements.

The raising of the arm is compressing this site. everywhere the arm has a hinge, the shoulder, elbow, or wrist the movement is compressing an already inflamed nerve.
Waking with hands asleep. driving and cannot hold the steering wheel without changing hands, unable to blowdry the hair or HOLD THE PHONE UP.

The name to search is Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. There are things to help, but I found the surgery really does not help long term. THey remove the first rib under the collar bone to free up the area. This tends to create adhisions from the surgery,. The scar matter grows and attaches to any structure nearby including the tendons and nerves in a grayish matter of webbed mess. A redo to clean it up is often needed.

Some people, about 50% of the population have short bands that attach the neck muscles and support to the collar bone. It is hereditary. You could go through life fine, but if a fall, accident cause a stretch to the nerves and they are inflamed, the compression escalates. As a whiplash you may hear that never goes away.

Sometimes it takes time and does, but a seconday thing in the body can be going on to that contributes. Some people have an extra cervical rib or malformed that compresses the area.

Some football players get zingers down the arm when it is hit and knocked backwards, same principle on the nerves.
I think it was Roger Clemmens of the Rangers had TOS thoracic outlet syndrome surgery,.....the pitcher.

The hip/leg can be the same way around the lumbar and hip, with radiating pain in the leg from a back injury.

Anyone over 30 is going to have bulging or compressed disc. Eventually over time our age, the disc lose height and compress too much, they can rupture into the spinal area causing pain from the compression.

I bought a hot tub years ago to help, and at the end of the day, get the pressure off my spine. I lay with pillows under my legs on the recliner, some buy those body inverters, me I would likely get stuck upside down.....But I think the ergonomics of the day help.

Does he have pain behind the shoulders above the wing? Link a knife in there, or areas along the shoulders that are tender. Everywhere a nerve inserts in the muscle to make it move can cause trigger points. Treating these can help the arms too.

I go through alot of Biofreeze, my TENS unit buy Relimed, and the only muscle relaxant that is a true one, small dose of valium near daily when in flares.
I have a massage specialist in working out the knots of trigger points, but that is brutal, not the spa experience, but certainly works....

Hope all feel better,

Heres hoping your husband has success with his upcoming surgery! :grouphug:
OP: scooter sounds best for you. Have a great trip! :grouphug:

Wow... I have some of these same symptoms. My left pinky goes to sleep and my left leg from the waist to just below the knee goes numb too. Can't do much with my arms either, but I think that has to do with an inherited cardio-vascular weirdness thing I've had since birth. Heart specialist said I was only 1 of 4 on the planet with this particular problem.

My back and top of my legs ache so bad after walking a block that I'm in tears and have to sit down. When I shop, if I bend over a shopping cart, I can relieve the pain. Dr. says it's Degenerative Disk Disease, whatever that means. I just know it hurts. He said it may not get any worse, but probably wouldn't get any better.

Very informative post... Thanks! :flower3:

I just got back!!!
I did rent a scooter for 3 days and it did work out well.
Moving around the crowds was a bit tricky. I have a new respect for the disabled (and my hubby was disabled) and I now know what you all go through.

While I was in line for a ride, a tween accidentally bumped into and I don't what happened, but for the rest of my trip, I had near ZERO Hip pain.

Wow that is great. It must be a siatica tpe pinched nerve. Years ago as a hairstylist leaning over the shampoo bowl and on my feet all day I had crippling hip leg pain.

My Dad helped me get into the car, horrid pain....as we pulled through a local parking lot he hit a pot hole really hard. I screamed out in pain with the jolt...
He looked at me asked what happend.
I told him ummm not sure, but something unpinched and never mind the ER, I felt pain free. So weird.
But hope it last for a long time!

I'm going in december and am considering renting one. I have arthritis in both my needs and left hip along with bursitis. I went last december and 2 days into the trip after we got off the grand prix cars i sat and cried for about 20 minutes because i was in SO much agony I had already been feeling the pain all day but just for some reason that ride did me in. My friend kept saying we can go back to the hotel its ok but I didnt want to ruin her trip (it was only like 6pm) the next day i rented an ecv at DAK and got a gac but when we switched to MK for the MVMCP they were out of ecv's so i put my name on the waitlist and got myself a push chair (let me tell you that was tough the chair needed a front end alignment) luckily about an hour later an ecv was ready but I was at LTT just about to sit for dinner my friend checked us in and I booked it to the front of the park limping using the w/c as a crutch I must have looked like a loon... but anyways i digress.. I've gone thru PT and all of that but PT ran out and as much as I do the exercises myself it never feels the same plus I use to get the ultrasound treatments (those were heavenly) im pretty much at a loss as to my next step my ortho guy was a jerk (he literally called me fat to my face)

I'd like another option though to renting a scooter ive only seen one company that rents power chairs (i'm a special ed teacher and am a wiz at driving the kids chairs) with the scooter I dont like how long I feel

if I do end up renting a chair or scooter do i need to let the hotel know? We are staying at the Caribbean Beach I requested the first floor since they dont have elevators and after a long day i dont think id be able to climb the stairs... id sleep on a lawn chair by the beach

thanks
Jill

If your reservation is for CBR, contact reservations and tell them that the primary request is for a first floor room and it is medically necessary. Having the "medical necessity" phrase makes it into a guarantee.

This is my alternative. But, also have rented off site a scooter many times.
This is one in black, I think great for a guy or woman that likes a black..

This is the one I own: Blue, I like that it is not so geratric,. But with my back problems my center core is out of kilter and the walking unsupported is a killer. I use this item for flea markets, amusement parks etc. Great wheels for on stones.

I found a coupon on retailmenot.com for $10 off so free shipping, no tax it came to $79, my first one on Amazon was $130.00. That was about 6 years ago.'Do a google search for drugstore.com coupons.
