Hello all! :)

My dh and I are throwing around the idea of buying into DVC and was hoping to get some insight/opinions on whether it would be worth it to us or not.

I'll give you my best estimate of what we're hoping from the DVC.

I have 2 girls, ages 8 and 6, who definitely want to go back to Disney, but with us living in Ohio, I don't see us going except for every 3-4 yrs.

But I do see us possibly taking advantage of Hilton Head more often.. maybe every other year.

And I'm not sure how this works, but with the world passport collection, I can definitely see us using that at least once a year. I know they've recently changed from Interval International though, so not sure how much is going to change there. But would it be worth it to buy into DVC mainly for the purpose of using this?

At this point, I'm thinking if we were to buy into it, we'd definitely buy a re-sale... and looking right now at either HHI or SSR.

So based on this info, should we forget it or would this be something that would actually be worth it to us?

Thanks for any help! :)

Based on what you're saying, here's my guess as to what you'd want:

1) A resale at HHI with half as many points as you would use on an average stay. (Say, 80-120)
2) A resale with the same UY as your HH contract at SSR or OKW, with 1/3 the number of points as you would use on your typical stay. (Say 60-100)
3) A cheaper, non-DVC timeshare for trading into RCI or II. The World Passport collection is not necessarily an efficient use of points. It's fine to trade DVC points occasionally into other timeshares, but if you're planning on doing this frequently, DVC is really not the best thing to use. It is not worth it to buy into DVC primarily for the world passport collection.

To me, every three or four years really isn't cost effective. Every other year at HHI, maybe, but not not really. Trading out two years in a row and then HHI or WDW? Try finding a good trade that will trade into DVC when you want to go to WDW.

I think the OP could get by with options 1 and 3. SSR and OKW aren't difficult to reserve at 7 months unless you're traveling between Thanskgiving and Christmas. They could get an HH contract with enough points to cover their HH and WDW stays, and a second timeshare for trading.

True, but as HH dues are about twice what SSR's are, and a good deal higher than OKW's, my thought was to get exactly what they'd need for HH, and then purchase points at a resort with lower MFs for the rest.

Thank you for the thoughts!! Does make a lot of sense... just buying the points for the years I think we'd be going. Also that way if we find we're going more frequently, can always add on, right? lol!

One quick question though, why isn't world passport a decent use of the points? I'm looking in the "dream" book, and it says for a high-season 1-bedroom villa, it costs 160 pts. Thinking if I bought a 100-pt contract, I could bank 60 pts and have a full-week vacation every other year at any of the places mentioned. Or am I reading the book wrong?

Thanks!

see if this thread helps explain the "value" issue...
