Alison this just broke my heart. I've been overweight most of my life, and it is all too easy, for me anyway, to think that people look at me differently because of it. I understand how Fran feels.

I agree with Corinna, it's probably best to wait until she's feeling as good as possible to be able to get the most out of the experience.

I'm sorry that both of you have felt that way. It just kills me that there are such shallow people out there who make others feel self conscious. I hope that I have never been guilty of that.

And no I did not take any photos. (Not weird at WDW or DL, a lot weird here) :rotfl:

Angel16

Oh come on! I do it all the time at places with good food. No one thinks I'm strange! (I think :rolleyes1)

Wendy is fine. Still doing pt and just returned from meeting the new grandson, Jeffrey. 8lbs and 21 inches.

Great news! Looking forward to the pictures!

Hi all :wave2:

You have convinced me I decided to make an ADR at both Jiko and Sanaa. Since I don't want to go overboard, we may just try apps or dessert and coffee at one or the other but at least this way we get to try them out :) We are so excited that we are already planning another Disney vacation for 2013. Our jobs make us plan our vacations over a year in advance but I noticed that resort reservations can't be made after Dec 31st of this year. Guess I will have to wait. Hubby (LJ) is very excited as this is his very first Disney visit ever. I can't wait to show him all the fun! We watched the Disney Parks video on Netflix and that was what made him want to plan another trip for next year. His quote "we can't possibly do ALL that in just one week" 3 days to go!

I just rented DVC points for our first stay at AKV. We could only book a standard studio as there was not any availability for a savannah studio. What type of view should we expect? And should I put in a request for a certain area?

I've heard of lucky people who get a partial savannah view in a standard view room, but you're probably going to get parking lot or grounds as your view. I'm hoping others will weigh in here. Please don't be discouraged, there are so many viewing sites all around the resort you won't miss out on the animals.

How lucky you are to have a DH that understands the need to see and do it all.. Congrats on the upcoming trip also.

I was so afraid I missed the pictures of your beautiful grandson. He is perfect in everyway:love:

Hi!
This is my first time on this thread and we're planning our first trip to akl. We're going June 10-16th. Can I be added to the list, even though I don't really know what the list is for? :)

I have some questions I can't really find the answers to so I figured you guys would be the perfect people to help!

We have a standard room and have requested the giraffe trail and wondered if anyone else has stayed in that and what was the view like and how was the proximity to the mara, pool and bus stops?

What is the culinary tour...I've heard it mentioned a lot, but what is it?

Is AKL really as dark as everyone says and how is the bus service? Those are really the only two negatives I've heard about it and I just wanted to hear about them from the people that love akl!

Also, we have a adr at boma for breakfast...does everyone like the breakfast buffet there?

Sorry it's a lot of questions but I really appreciate the helpfulness of all of you!!!:flower3:

I'm really excited to stay here, I think it looks like the most beautiful place!

I'm sorry I didn't get on yesterday. Unpacking, doing laundry etc from 12 days of vacation never gave me enough free time.

As others have stated, standard rooms on the Giraffe trail are between the bus loading area and the pool. I don't think I would want to be in a room on the first floor because some of those patios are only separated from the bus waiting area by a thick concrete wall with occasional openings. The third floor is the floor that connects to the lobby. Both Giraffe and Zebra trail are so much more convenient to the pool and restaurants than Kudu and Ostrich trails. We were just in a pool view room on Zebra trail #4418 with easy access to everything.

The free culinary tour is offered daily and is open to anyone. It starts from the Jiko podium at 4 pm. I did not make it down until 4:07 but was allowed to join the tour in progress in Boma. Butternut Squash Soup was one of the soup choices that day and our guide dished up generous bowls for each of us. When we reached the dessert selections she offered a Zebra Dome to everyone where I mentioned that I was one of the 2% of the population that did not care for Zebra Domes. After a moment of hesitation she offered me any other dessert I may like so I had one of those chocolate oval shaped goodies. Boma begins dinner service at 4:30 pm so we were turned over to a different guide for Jiko and had a slightly shorter tour there. Two hidden Mickey's were pointed out, the wood burning ovens were discussed and then we stood at the bar facing the ovens where we were presented with baskets of various flatbreads accompanied by 4 dipping sauces. In both restaurants we learned of South African culture, food descriptions were given and at Jiko we also learned about the wines (but no free tastes of wine.) I think the tour was complete about 4:45 pm.

The only area of the guestrooms that I felt was entirely too dark was the small bathroom area that contained just the tub/shower and the toilet. The light over the tub was quite dim and for persons like me who may do a little reading in the early morning while DH is still asleep your eyes really have to adjust to the low light before being able to read while on the toilet.

We've stayed at AKL twice and have had poor experience with the bus service both times. That is our only negative for AKL. We have waited more than 25 minutes for a bus and even then they have arrived with standing room for most of the persons waiting at Jambo House. But having white hair does have some advantages and young men have always stood and offered me their seats. We know how to exit the parks after fireworks to make it to the first buses back to our lodgings so that has not been a problem.

Breakfast at Boma is fantastic. If you like omelets, there is a made to order omelet section along the buffet line. I discovered they even have spinach, which was not shown in the offerings, that can be added which I had added to my omelet. I agree with Pam (Pinkoto) that the Juice is delicious although a little sweet. I also had tea to curtail the amount of juice I consumed.

To mrsmorgan - Believe it or not, the parsnip creme brulee at Jiko is divine. It tastes similar to a wonderful warm pumpkin pie filling. Folks we had met at EPCOT in the Soarin' line had recommended it to us.

To Wendy - Jeffrey is so adorable - congratulations!

Thanks KathyZ for giving such a good description of the Culinary Tour! I should be taking it in about 66 days. I'm looking forward to it!
