This is my first time on this thread and we're planning our first trip to akl. We're going June 10-16th. Can I be added to the list, even though I don't really know what the list is for?

I have some questions I can't really find the answers to so I figured you guys would be the perfect people to help!

We have a standard room and have requested the giraffe trail and wondered if anyone else has stayed in that and what was the view like and how was the proximity to the mara, pool and bus stops?

What is the culinary tour...I've heard it mentioned a lot, but what is it?

Is AKL really as dark as everyone says and how is the bus service? Those are really the only two negatives I've heard about it and I just wanted to hear about them from the people that love akl!

Also, we have a adr at boma for breakfast...does everyone like the breakfast buffet there?

Good morning, 6 days until AKL, our first visit. I've made ADR at Boma for dinner, Flying Fish, and debating Sanaa and Jiko. I think we might try to sneak in "date night" at Jiko towards the end of the trip if grandma and grandpa will watch the little girls.

On giraffe trail you may get a pool view of you may have a parking lot/bus stop view. I am not familar with that trail as far as access to the pool. You would be on the other side of the Mara (meaning just a walk from the pool right into the Mara, Boma and Jiko) and very close to the bus stops.

What is the culinary tour...I've heard it mentioned a lot, but what is it?

This is the discription I found. Culinary Tour — Boma–Flavors of Africa followed by Jiko–The Cooking Place. We plan on taking this tour this year for the first time. I have read here on the DIS that people really enjoyed it, found it interesting and educational. They also were given samples of items during the tour. I can not say if they are still giving samples. You might want to do a search for the Culinary Tour and see what has recently been written.

IMHO it is not dark, however the wood work in the lobby is a dark wood. It is so beautiful with the carved wood and african art. I have never had a problem with the hotel rooms being dark. There is plenty of light for make-up and hair in the bathroom.

The breakfast is very good, we have enjoyed it. We usually plan on either dinner or breakfast at Boma on each trip.

Wow...not long now. We love Jiko and tried Sanaa for a late lunch on our last visit. We can't wait to go back! The animals come up so close to the windows at Sanaa, great place to eat and enjoy viewing.

You might want to check out Simba's Clubhouse for your girls. It is at Jambo house. We did this at the Poly back in 2006. Our 4 year old GD LOVED it (she didn't want to leave) and it gave us all a night out. We did Victoria & Alberts chef's table with our family. The clubhouses are available for ages 3-12, they provide many activies, dress-up, movies, games. They also provide dinner and late night snack.

I will be back to my laptop tomorrow and can post a more complete update for you. Yes, as of last week the culinary tour still gave you a bowl of soup, a Zebra Dome and a basket of flatbreads & spicy dips to share.
