Settle the score--Christmas party or no?

I keep reading and hearing conflicting assessments regarding Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party. So what's the real story? A must see? Nothing but hype-it's not worth it?

No rush--I've got 16 months to figure it out, but I'd like to know.

thanks!

For us, its a must see. Just to walk down main street at night, with the christmas decorations up, the warm glow of the lights from the store, walking towards the castle..and in the snow...is SO worth it for us. The parade is really cute. There are special shows and the characters are all dressed for winter and the holidays. Last year, we went twice. Im not sure of my dates yet, I know we are going at least once. We love it.

The Christmas Party was one of our two biggest WDW disappointments (with the other being Mickey's Backyard BBQ.)

I didn't think it was anything special...particularly for the cost. We thought the Osborne Lights at MGM was a much more impressive event.

We went last year for the first time, and would definitely do it again! (Even tho we lost DS 4 for about 25 painful minutes!)

Let's face it--if you go in thinking it's a waste, you'll definitely think it was. After all, the rides are the same and everything is already decorated, so you can see that during the day. The differences may not seem big-- They serve free hot chocolate and cookies, the parade is Xmas themed, and all the characters are dressed for the holidays. Special fireworks. There is "snow" falling on Main Street when you come in--I think it's actually soap. You get a free family portrait taken.

BUT---the whole night is well, MAGICAL! I can't explain it other than that! The people/families that are there are all so excited to be there--who else would spend the extra money to re-enter the same park? Everyone's having a great time and it's more relaxed than during the day when everyone's running to and from all the rides. It's more like having a big party.

We couldn't fit early Dec into our schedule this year, so we'll be trying out MNSSHP in Oct instead. Can't wait!

To MVMCP at least once and most years twice since 1992.Going to MVMCP this year on Decemeber 6th and 8th.To us it is worth the money and is part of our holiday tradition. We love the special fireworks, parade and shows we experience. That's what we attend it for,if it was just about attractions we could do them on a normal visit to MK during our stay.If it is your first time attending I would advise you go to a MVMCP on any day offered but Friday. They tend to be very crowded. :goodvibes :wizard: :flower:

Yes it is a must see, we go every trip.

we would definitely do it again! it was magical!! We loved all the christmas stuff... and I remember tink looking a bit different ;)

Definately not worth it for us. We went last year for the first time. There were tons and tons of people - more than at a regular day at the park. We had reservations at the Liberty Tree Tavern for dinner and we had to wait for an hour to be seated. The waiting area was so packed at the Liberty Tree Tavern that you couldn't even breathe. The lines were long about 30 minutes to 60 minutes for each ride. We couldn't get our picture taken because the line was 60 minutes. The pushing and shoving during and after the fireworks was unbearable. The parade was great and the holiday lights are beautiful but you can see that at Disney on a regular day during the holidays. I would def. go there during December and spend a full day at Disney instead of going for a couple of house during MVMCP. Try it out for yourself and let us know what you thought about it. :earsgirl:

Oh yuck. What a disappointment that would have been.

Which day did you go? Was it a Friday?

Arrrgh. glawgirl's post is bringing up bad memories. :(

Just to add some detail to my previous post.

Our PS experience was also less than magical. We had PS for around 4:45 at the Crystal Palace. They seated us in a busy area right near the buffet. There were 6 of us (4 adults, 2 kids, one in a highchair) at a round table that I felt was designed for 4 diners. And the lack of attention we got from our server was such that we had a stack of empty plates nearly a foot high in the middle of the table at one point.

The characters seemed to be all grouped together. For 45 minutes we sat there with my son asking "why won't Pooh come over and see me", which was a first in our character dining experiences. We had all finished our meals and were just killing time before the first character came by. Once the first arrived, they all followed quickly behind and we got out of there.

None of that necessarily relates to the party itself, but I thought I'd share since glawgirl had another bad dining experience.

As for MVMCP, we attended the last Tuesday party in Decmeber '04 and didn't expect HUGE crowds. And, as expected, the crowds were not unreasonable. We knew to get our photos right away, so that only took us about 30 minutes. The photos came out very nice and we got a bunch of copies sent to us in the mail.

The most striking thing I remember about the party were the lines for the parade. They say to wait for the later parade if you can (which I think is around 9:45pm), but that's not really an option when you have an 18 month-old.

Anyway, a full NINETY MINUTES before the parade, the curbside crowds were two and three deep all the way along main street and the castle courtyard. Sorry...nothing magical about sitting by the curb for 1 1/2 hours trying to entertain two kiddies with the light chaser vendors coming by every few seconds.

We ended up grabbing a spot near Splash Mountain about 20-30 minutes before the parade started. I decided early there was no way I would follow the lemmings and sit on a curb for 2 hours. If we hadn't found the spot we did, we likely would have skipped the parade altogether.

We only did one or two rides (Buzz and maybe something else). It was in the 50s, so there was no interest in Splash Mtn or any of the other outdoor rides. We did get a lot of character photos, which was nice. They had the characters out everywhere, and rarely were the lines long.

Some will probably say that I'm too hung up on the price / value and not appreciating the "magic." Perhaps that's true. But if I'd have felt MORE "magic", the price wouldn't have been an issue. As it was, we paid nearly $200 for the tickets, and it didn't feel much different than a typical day at the Magic Kingdom.

I should note that we are Annual Passholders. One of the nice benefits of MVMCP is that you can get into the park after 4pm with just the MVMCP ticket. For folks using MYW passes, it's much easier to justify the cost by shortening your MYW pass by a day, and finding something else to occupy your self on the day of the party until 4pm. In our case, we already had our AP admission for the day, and still paid an extra $200 on top for the MVMCP tickets.

In all honesty, the party was something that we had to experience first-hand in order to pass judgement. I don't necessarily regret going...but we won't be rushing back again in the future.

No - we went on a Tuesday or Wednesday during the first week of December last year. We were all looking forward to it. For some crazy reason I thought that it was not going to be so packed. I was totally wrong. Some people love it - it just wasnt' great for us.

We go, its a tradition. This will be our 3rd party. We love it and whenever we go its always slow. We have never waited more than 10 minutes for a ride, walked right up to characters for pictures and such.

We usually don't watch the parade though. The longest line we wait in is for the free pic. It constantly moves but probably in there 15-20 minutes. We usually do that first thing and get it out of the way which may be why its longer.

We also make sure to get the special shirts, pins and such too.

We grab cookies and cocoa and have a seat for the fireworks.

We love it.

Whether it is worth it (and that is pretty true of anything - are the deluxes worth the addtional, are the table service restaurants worth additonal) is such an individual thing - it really depends on your interests and your wallet.

I have been twice. Did I enjoy it? Yes. Is it on my list of "must-do's"? No.

I enjoyed it, but it is not something I have to do on every trip. We are going this December and are not planning to do this.. I certainly, though, wouldn't tell someone not to go - it is good; I am just not one of those who think it is great.

We love it and have gone 3 times and will be going again this December.

I think it's something you need to experience yourself. If you love seeing MK at night with Christmas music playing and the snow falling and a free photo and a great Christmas parade and special Wishes fireworks and special Christmas shows, then give it a try once. See for yourself.

Yes, some nights are busier then others. If you do not plan it or have a basic idea of what you want to get done or if you arrive late, then you may experience a not so great night.

Good luck deciding.

::yes:: I agree with every word posted here.

We weren't impressed with MVMCP at all. JMO though!

gosh.. I am shocked by the crowds being mentioned here.. it was soooo empty when we were there.. we could walk onto anything!!!!

Thanks for asking this, Fargoman. I was wondering, too, AND I have the same amount of time to decide!

Seems to be passion on both sides of this one. I am a bit puzzled by the reports of massive crowds. I was under the impression from many other accounts that the crowds, especially during the first week of December, were more than manageable--even after allowing for more density in population at the party.

Oh well, I guess the only way to find out is to go and form my own opinion.

Thanks for sharing!
