Setesdalen Mineral Park - on your own?

In Kristiansand, is it possible to do the Mineral Park on your own or is the best bet the port adventure? What is the best way to get there? My two kids are HUGE fans of gems, rocks, etc. and the idea that there is buried treasure on the beach that you can keep is very exciting to them.
