Ok, everybody help me out. What is the difference between the dining room server, the dining room assistant server and the dining room head server? Don't they all do practically the same thing? I'm trying to get this tip thing straight. Peace.

I'm going to move this to the main cruise forum for you where I'm sure you'll get more answers. As to the differences:

Asst. dining room server takes you drink orders and clears the plates, etc.

Dining room server takes all of your food orders and recommends dishes for the evening.

These two work in tandom on the same set of tables and travel with you on your dining rotation.

The head server is over a large group of tables/servers/asst. servers. Their job is to make sure things run smoothly. You actually won't see a lot of what they do and they do a lot behind the scenes. Really good ones will stop by the table each evening and will also be part of any celebrations you have (birthdays, anniveraries, etc.). They are also to go to person if you have any problems.

We just got off of the 3 day 12/21 Wonder so here you go:

Dining Room Server: The one who takes your food order and bring your food.
Dining Room Asst Server: The one who takes your drink order and bring your drinks.
Dining Room Head Server: The person responsible for the entire restaurant (you may not meet this person or he or she may come by your table to ask is everything "OK")

I hope that helps.

The head server is not responsible for the entire restaurant. There are several head servers in each restaurant. The head server supervises several teams of servers/assistant servers. There is another person who is the head of the entire dining room (not a tipped position) and over him is a person in charge of all dining on the ship. (not tipped).

The head server supervises his group of server/assistant teams. He is responsible for any special celebrations (birthdays, anniversaries), any special requests, allergy alerts (he may call in one of the chefs on this occasionally), and making things run smoothly. You may see him serving food/drinks if your serving team is running behind, but this is not his main job. His primary responsibility is to see that everything is going smoothly. As above, much of what he does is "behind the scenes."

I commented to our favorite server that one head server seemed to be a "dud." This was a server we had requested on several cruises and trusted totally. He told me that this head server was his "best friend" and did a whole lot I couldn't see to make the server's life easier.
