My beloved partner and I went to Orlando Pride (Come Out With Pride Orlando) today. It was the first time we've been able to make it to the Orlando Pride.
I saw your photos in the other thread Rosie! Thanks for posting!
I had a terrible time with the hate crimes section. It was one of those uncontrollable visceral reactions. I couldn't listen to the presentation (10 years since beautiful Matthew was murdered) and I couldn't look at the incredible display of other people we have lost through hatred and bigotry.
Every single time we'd walk near that display I'd immediately start lose composure (in a very hard hitting way). It is just too much sometimes. All those beautiful faces of people who have been killed in horrible fashion for no reason other than someone else's hatred turned deadly.
We were very pleased to see Disney leading the parade with those beautiful draft horses and lovely wagon. There was a nice contingent of CMs too, all in Disney shirts. Universal Studios was represented as well. They had some of their stilt walkers with them, and their marching employees all carried the flag.
The parade was about an hour long and there were hysterically funny moments, and then the personal struggle again when the Hate Crimes contingent passed.
I felt the presence of recognizing what HIV+ and AIDS has done to our community was not strong enough, nor was the presence of lesbians.
But for the most part, it was an ok little job the organizers did! It's not Miami, and G-d help us, it's not NY, but hey-it was an organized event and I am happy that we attended.
Now if I could just get the image of those faces out of my head.
