Ok so I work at a large company at the front desk, and at least 10 times a day, someone will call and the conversation goes something like this:

Me: It's a great day at Company X, we appreciate your business, this is lyzziesmom, how may I direct your call? (yes I have to say that every time)
Caller: Hi, um, someone called me from there earlier/yesterday/last week and didn't leave a message, I saw the number on my caller ID. Who called me?
Me: I'm sorry, I'm not sure.
Caller: What company is this? What do you do there?
Me: This is Company X, we do this & that.
Caller: Well I don't know why you're calling me. Who called me?
Me: We have over 200 people here, I'm sorry I don't know who called you.
Caller: Why didn't they leave a message? I don't understand why you're calling me! Is there someone I can talk to?

Seriously, WHO does this? I mean, if an unfamiliar number comes up on my caller ID and no message is left, I just hit "delete" and go on my merry way. Has anyone experienced this or done this, and for goodness sakes, WHY?? :confused3

People do it all the time, and I have no idea why. It is truly bizarre.

First of all, I am incredibly sorry that you have to say that every time you answer the phone. Yikes. :teeth:

Secondly--I get about 10 of these calls every day. I work at a college. With probably close to a hundred employees just in my department. Students will call and say, "Yeah, this number was on my caller ID. Who called me and what did they want?"

Get a life, for heaven's sake. If they didn't leave a message, then they either dialed the wrong number or realized they were going to see you in class in an hour. You're not that important, people.

Thanks for letting me share your vent, lyzziesmom!

I was the receptionist here also for 5 years. I hate it when people do that!!!!! I dont know who called you, if you dont know anyone that well to know that they work here dont call back!!!!!!!!

Okay...I don't do that, but sometimes I'm tempted!

There is a number (listed as "800 service") on my caller id that calls several times a day. DH answered it once, they asked to speak to me but wouldn't tell him who they were or what they wanted. We ignore the calls now, but it is frustrating to come home and see that you have 3 new messages on your machine only to find there are really NO messages...

I have considered calling them...several times a day...but I don't think it would have the same effect.

I get these calls ALL THE TIME!!!! And I work for a government office so when they hear the name they usually freak out. They say "Am I in trouble?" I just say, "If someone wants you badly enough, they'll call back."

We're also the first government agency in the phone book, so we'll get random calls. They'll ask for a random person who doesn't work here. I'll say, "Are you sure you have the right office?" They say "No, but they work for the state, just find them." I want to scream "We have 400,000 people working for the state. I don't know them all, and they don't all have the same phone number!!" :rotfl:

I get this all the time myself! It amazes me the number of people who call someone back just from a caller ID number! I get people who call me back on my cell phone when I've misdialed before...

If I don't recognize the name/number...it's not worth the time to call them back! :)

I work at a university and sometimes have to cover for the receptionist when her back ups are out. We get this call all the time. It's a very large university as well and all and I don't work in every department on campus so I have no idea who calls people and doesn't leave a message. Then they get mad at me because I can't tell them more information yeah right it's not like I have a crystal ball that lets me see the past!

They didn';t leave a message cause they didn't want to or didn't have time you :sunny: :sunny: :sunny: :sunny: :sunny: Sorry, it made me frustrated. Lyke omgz, they are so mean why didn't they leave a message?
MAYBE THEY DON'T LIKE SOMEONE WHO WON'T SHUTUP!
Sorry, frustrated.

If they have caller ID, THEN CALL THEM BACK YOU :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 !

This also happens at my job all the time. I'm not the receptionist, but even I pick up calls like this sometimes. We just tell the people that someone probably misdialed, and if they really wanted to reach them they'll call back. It's so frustrating, because if someone from here calls they will leave a message.

When I have a call I don't recognize and they don't leave a message, I reverse look it up to see if I recognize who it was and why they would call me, otherwise I just ignore it and figure that they'll call back if they really want me.

My sympathies to you for having to say that every time. :sad2:

I do at home telemarketing--I get this daily when I work for a particular line that answers hundreds of toll free numbers.

My favorite is when someone calls me back from their caller id wanting to know why I called.

I don't make outbound calls--yet they don't seem to believe me.

First: Sorry you have to say that little speach every time you answer the phone! Ugh!!

Second: People don't seem to understand the fact that you and your co-workers don't discuss every phone call that is made. I work at a company that has 3,000 and 7 different buildings just on this campus. Sales people will call and ask for "so and so" and they just don't seem to get it that I might not know who that is. The answer is usually, "But they work there!" and my answer is, "So do a lot of people!"

People have to make you laugh because they would just frustrate you to death!

Who does this? Self-centered, self-important people who have nothing better to do with their time than to harass a poor receptionist.

Give me a break already! If they didn't leave a message, then IT WASN'T THAT IMPORTANT!!!! Duh. :sad2:

If I returned every call on our Caller ID that didn't leave a message I wouldn't get anything else done!

The only ones we do call back are the ones who are looking for someone with our last name but they have the wrong #. We call them back because if we ignore them they keep calling. And calling. And calling.

DH called back someone who left a message for him. They asked for his account number. He said he doesn't have an account with them, yet they keep leaving voice mails. They asked for his ss#. He told them NO WAY. They said they couldn't help him. I called them and said "Someone from your company keeps calling here and leaving mesages but we don't have an account with you." They asked for our phone #. I told them, they looked it up, noted it as a wrong #, haven't heard from them since. Not sure WHY they couldn't do that for DH!

My housecleaning company (Merry Maids) answers their phone like that whenever I call. I know it's got to be so annoying for them.

When I worked in a grocery store, I got a ton of callbacks from people wondering who called them & why. I didn't have a clue and hated that they didn't believe me.

I work for a branch of the military. People will call our office wanting me to help them find someone in the military. I try to explain to them that I don't have access to that information. And if I did, I would not release it to them.
