Cannon just cut the price of a digital SLR camera in half!

From Steve's DigiCams:
Canon's New EOS Digital Rebel Rocks the Camera World with Affordable New 6.3 Megapixel Autofocus SLR
New Digital Rebel/EF-S 18-55 mm Lens Kit Arrives in Stores Around Mid September With An Estimated Selling Price of $999

See: http://www.steves-digicams.com/pr/canon_08202003_300d_pr.html

or

This isn't the camera for everyone but Zurg may sell every camera he owns and get one.

But then this new Sony looks real cool too.

Steve's Digi Cams also has there best of list out but I don't think either of these new cameras was out when he made the list up:

You have to love the Canon lens lineup, and every EF lens will fit on the new Digital Rebel. 6.3 Megapixels for $900????? You gotta be kiddin me!!!!!

Oh how yummy! I wish I had one, I could take great pix for my site.

Hey, maybe I should take up a collection. :teeth:

OMG!!! With the prices dropping like that, I may not have to wait nearly as long as I thought to upgrade to one of those!!!! Thanks Zurg!!!

Yeah that is a shot accross the bow for the other manufacturers.

Only place for prices to go is down. :)

Figures... buy a 10D and they come out with something cheaper. No matter, my 10D is sturdier being partly metal, rather than plastic - and I definitely need the increased resistance to wear and tear.

fyi - Pick up the new Rebel, a couple of microdrives, shoot in RAW format and you'll have pictures you never thought possible with digital. I swear I come up with stuff that looks better than anything I ever got with slide film! I highly recommend the new camera - with so many of the same features as the 10D, you won't regret it.

It is interesting that Canon is also making a line of lenses that are designed specifically for that camera and hence the S designation. Due to the smaller sensor size, they have a smaller shutter which allows them to make a smaller lens jsut for this camera. Not sure if that strategy is going to work in the long run. The advantage of SLR is buying a lens that you can use on all camera bodies. Nikon is doing the same thing with the DX lenses.

My prediction is that this will force Nikon to lower the price on the D100, which is a good thing. Nikon will then come out with a D2x to go with the D2h for their professional line.

Nikon still has no answer to the Canon 1Ds, though.

I imagine this Canon Digital Rebel will be a very popular camera.

My SLR is a Pentax and it looks like Pentax is coming out with the same thing!!!! I am so psyched because I will be able to use my existing lens collection.....

good thing they cut the price cause I didn't feel like paying 1500 bux for a digital canon

So... I currently have a Cannon EOS Rebel SLR and a few extra lenses for it. I read Steve's page, but I am not a technical person. Is this saying I can use my current Cannon lenses on this new camera. That would make a HUGE difference in my feelings about this. (I don't want to start ALL over!)

That's what it says.. it looks to me like it uses standard canon EF lenses...
I wonder what kind of results I could get with my F. 1.4.....or my 300.... OH man this is cool!

I went to Zurg's second link, which linked on over to the Cannon website and I think that I could use my exisiting lens.

This may be a "must have" before my December cruise and Disney trip.

I'm thinking of possibilites here....
Night work... the digital with the zoom lens and the 35 body with a 1.4 lens and some 800 speed for those low light shots the digitals still don't do as well....

Now this is a digital SLR that I can almost afford! I said almost :(

Not to rain on the parade here (I'm looking for a digital SLR that I can use my 300mm bayonette-mount Pentax lense on myself), but if you read the fine print, it says the LENSE KIT for this camera will be $999. The BODY is $899. Still, for $899 it's a heck of a deal, but to get the full capability of the lense shown, you're looking at almost $1900.

That Sony is VERY tempting!

I think he mis-phrased that.. scroll down to the price and availability section

Now I'm even more confused. The description for the "zoom lens kit" does not say the camera body is included. However, the description for the other options sounds like it's the same thing without the lense. Then again, $100 seems about right for the lense, so I think you're right. COOL! I did some research and found out the Pentax istD coming out next month supposedly supports my old K-mount lense! There's some discussion as to whether it can meter properly, but I'm keeping my eyes open!

The estimated selling price for the zoom lens kit which includes a battery pack and charger, plus software, manuals, interface cables, neck strap and Canon USA limited warranty will be $999*. The estimated selling price for the body-only kit with the same accessories and limited warranty will be $899*.

Don't despair about the 10D... it is a much better camera than the Rebel. The Rebel is perfect for anyone looking for an entry level SLR. I called a few of my relatives and told them about the Rebel after I heard about it... since a few of them were drueling over my 10D and really wanted one but didn't want to lay out the cash.

If you are someone who loves using a point-n-shoot type of camera, I'd recommend the Rebel. However, if you are a Pro looking to step into the world of digital SLRs, I'd spend a little more and go for the 10D. A pro user will probably be a little disappointed in the Rebel since it automates a lot of the picture taking process and lacks some of the customization features that are in the 10D (i.e. control over autofocus points, customization and some other features).

Also, people have to keep in mind that most Digital SLRs do NOT come with a lens. The Rebel is an exception in that they do sell a kit with the lens -- and from what I've heard, the lens is made specifically with the Rebel in mind (since it is aimed at the entry level or prosumer market). The higher end SLRs that actually include a lens usually include a junky one that may produce pictures not as good as a traditional point-n-shoot.

The cool part about any of the Canon SLRs, is that if you have a bunch of EF/EOS compatible lenses, you can plop them onto the camera and use them. However, keep in mind that the focal length of the lens must be multiplied by 1.6x to get the true focal length of the lens since some cropping is involved. So, if you have a 35mm lens, you actually won't get as much in your shot with a digital SLR as you would with a traditional SLR (i.e. 35mm = 56mm on a digital SLR). That's one of the reasons they sell an 18-55mm zoom lens with the rebel SLR camera, since it actually ends up being a 28-90mm zoom lens after the cropping.

Like other people have said -- once you try a Digital SLR, you will be shocked at what the pictures look like. If you buy good lenses, you can go wild and be super creative. If you visit our site starting on the night of the 27th -- we'll be posting photo trip reports each day that will feature pictures taken with the 10D.
