DH is trying to get home, the trains are running slow/late and the conductors are packing people on like a Japanese subway. He parks in a garage a few blocks from the station and has an old car. I offered to come down and get him and we would deal with his car later, he has a monthly parking pass. I called the village to double check and this is what the woman said:

"Well, he can come to the village hall (even farther than the parking garage) and buy an overnight pass."

Excuse me??? We are in the beginning of a freaking blizzard! I can't believe how fast it has deteriorated and they still want their $4 to leave the car there!!! Honestly I expected the woman to say don't worry about it as long as it out by Thursday night, no problem.

Good grief!

Did you ask what happens if any random person just leaves a car there overnight?

That is frickin' ridiculous! They should be helping y'all in an emergency.

If a state of emergency is declared, would the $25 ticket apply? The next question then becomes, is it looking bad enough to become a state of emergency (I know that the news looks nasty....)?

Yes, he would get a $25 ticket! :headache:

Cheaper then the deductible on your insurance. It would make sense if they had someone AT the garage collecting fees for people that need to keep their cars there overnight? Maybe your DH can charge $5 to anyone that needs to keep their cars there, collect a bunch of money, take one trip down and buy a bunch of overnight stickers-pocket the extra $1/ticket :thumbsup2

I assume that the Police patrol the lot and issue the tickets so if thats the case, the woman really doesn't have the power to let people park there without the overnight ticket.

ETA I would risk the $25 ticket to get home safely.

That is ridiculous! At this point I think getting home safe is more important and you can deal with a ticket if they issue them later. Somehow I think the police are going to be too busy tonight to deal with ticketing in parking garages.

IL Governor has declared a state of emergency.

While the powers that be should use some common sense and waive the fee I suspect the person you spoke with does not have said powers and had to just tell you the policy, not if it will be enforced under the current circumstances.

I'm missing something to this story. If you can drive to the station safe enough, why can't DH drive home? Or just drive him to the garage and have him follow you home in your tire tracks? When you say it's an old car, do you mean, no 4-wheel drive? Old as in when they made the cars cheaper and too lightweight to have much traction?

You'd better check the laws of your state even if the IL Governor has declared a state of emergency.

In NYC, on show days, our parking rules are suspended and people can leave their cars. In NJ, I *think* their rules are that the cars have to be off the streets so the plows can get through.

If you leave DH's car in the garage, and it's one of those open style garages where the snow gets in, they may plow all around the car leaving piles of snow banks around the car, so that no only does he have a $25 ticket, he then has to shovel his car out the next day.

I had the same first thought...when did it get better to drive both ways then to drive one way.

I have driven through snow storms you wouldn't believe with "old" cars...meaning rear wheel drive, and made it just fine. It's just a matter of being careful and driving a reasonable rate of speed. If he's out there with bald tires then someone should have told him to look at the weather forecast, this storm didn't just jump up there with no warning. If it's because the road conditions are so bad that there is no visibility, well, news flash, you're not going to see any better in a "new" car.

Maybe the person is not even from the area. It seems everyone is outsourcing their calls.

I hope he gets home safely. The wind is pretty noisy.

I'd imagine he drives his car to a station and then takes a train into work. (I'm clueless about Chicago and have no clue if they have a subway! LOL) I'm guessing the OP means she'd drive to his work and leave his car in the local parking garage.

My ex used to commute into DC by driving to a station and taking the train into the city and then the metro to his job. Same principle, I'm sure.

OP - I'd just eat the $25. Sucks, but it might be worth all the hassle and they might not charge it in the end.

DH is home safely...yea!

He drives a 12 yo Bonneville and while we do keep it maintained, it isn't the greatest in the snow. I have a much newer van with traction control, abs etc etc. Plus I was trying to save him the walk to the parking garage after having had to walk from his building to the downtown train station.

I was probably fussing too much it just took me by surprise that it wasn't just policy to let cars be rather than have people try and drive them out.

All is well and we are hunkered down, good thing because that wind is HOWLING!

Are you in DG?

OP, glad you BOTH made it home safely. :thumbsup2

Your regulations are probably like NJ, where they just make a general rule to get all the cars off the streets (& garages & lots,) so they can plow.

Totally OT: Hey CR! Haven't seen you around for a while. Today's Groupon discount deal here is for a haircut with a Moroccan Oil treatment for $45. I thought of you and all your recommendations for the MO, so I signed up for it. For some reason, they even gave me another $10 off! :thumbsup2
