Hello. You think you don't know who I am, but you do. I am well known (and well liked as far as I know) on both VMK and DIS. I am writing this post under a fake name because, well to be honest I am afraid. I am afraid of close-minded individuals who may not agree with what I am posting or think that it is inappropriate for this board and therefore, dislike or shun me for it.
My question is, is Disney/VMK homophobic?
Here is the situation that occurred last night in my room. I was hanging out with several vmk friends and one of them is a friend in real life, who is 19 years old and is a lesbian. Now I know that a lot of "do you want to be my boy/girl" and "I am taken by the cutest blah blah" goes on in VMK. VMK seems to have no problem with children "hooking up" virtually.
Well, as we were hanging out talking, a girl wandered in and asked if there were any girls who liked girls in here. My friend replied, "I do!" The unknown girl then asked if my friend wanted to be her "girl". My friend said something like "are you a kid? because I am not." The girl said "I'm not a kid". My friend said, "okay, I'll be your girl". They said something along the lines of, "okay so we are girl friend and girl friend then". And smiley faces popped up. Nothing else. They chatted a bit about "how are you doing" and "what kind of music do you like"; usual normal acceptable speech. For about 30 seconds. Then, suddenly, both girls disappeared from the screen.
My friend in real life then called me and told me what happened.
Apparently she got a pop-up window saying she had a 2 hour ban for "inappropriate behavior" or something like that. I can only assume the other girl had the same thing happen, since she did not come back to the room (I had friended her).
So, does VMK/Disney consider it "inappropriate" for people to be gay? Can gay people not be "taken" by members of the same sex on VMK like straight people can? I would think two ADULTS in a virtual "relationship" of the same sex would be more appropriate than two 7 or 8 year old children of the opposite sex having one. Either way, it's only virtual and no personal info can be given out anyway, so the whole "taken" thing has never bothered me.
I was just apalled that VMK would ban someone for being gay. There was no suggestive language or anything else that could have gotten them banned, I was with my friend the whole evening and she neither said nor did anything that would cause a ban besides that encounter. My transcription of the conversation is pretty accurate to the best of my knowledge and if the same conversation occurred between a boy and girl, I KNOW they would not be banned, because I see it happen all the time.
I would really appreciate anyone's thoughts/opinions on this. I am sorry I am keeping my identity a secret, but after this occurrence, I don't want to be banned from DIS for discussing homosexuality. I thought gays and lesbians were becoming more accepted in society these days, but after last night it seems not to be so, at least not at VMK.
Thanks for listening and for your opinions.
