Serious question on a sensitive topic...you know who I am

Hello. You think you don't know who I am, but you do. I am well known (and well liked as far as I know) on both VMK and DIS. I am writing this post under a fake name because, well to be honest I am afraid. I am afraid of close-minded individuals who may not agree with what I am posting or think that it is inappropriate for this board and therefore, dislike or shun me for it.

My question is, is Disney/VMK homophobic?

Here is the situation that occurred last night in my room. I was hanging out with several vmk friends and one of them is a friend in real life, who is 19 years old and is a lesbian. Now I know that a lot of "do you want to be my boy/girl" and "I am taken by the cutest blah blah" goes on in VMK. VMK seems to have no problem with children "hooking up" virtually.

Well, as we were hanging out talking, a girl wandered in and asked if there were any girls who liked girls in here. My friend replied, "I do!" The unknown girl then asked if my friend wanted to be her "girl". My friend said something like "are you a kid? because I am not." The girl said "I'm not a kid". My friend said, "okay, I'll be your girl". They said something along the lines of, "okay so we are girl friend and girl friend then". And smiley faces popped up. Nothing else. They chatted a bit about "how are you doing" and "what kind of music do you like"; usual normal acceptable speech. For about 30 seconds. Then, suddenly, both girls disappeared from the screen.

My friend in real life then called me and told me what happened.
Apparently she got a pop-up window saying she had a 2 hour ban for "inappropriate behavior" or something like that. I can only assume the other girl had the same thing happen, since she did not come back to the room (I had friended her).

So, does VMK/Disney consider it "inappropriate" for people to be gay? Can gay people not be "taken" by members of the same sex on VMK like straight people can? I would think two ADULTS in a virtual "relationship" of the same sex would be more appropriate than two 7 or 8 year old children of the opposite sex having one. Either way, it's only virtual and no personal info can be given out anyway, so the whole "taken" thing has never bothered me.

I was just apalled that VMK would ban someone for being gay. There was no suggestive language or anything else that could have gotten them banned, I was with my friend the whole evening and she neither said nor did anything that would cause a ban besides that encounter. My transcription of the conversation is pretty accurate to the best of my knowledge and if the same conversation occurred between a boy and girl, I KNOW they would not be banned, because I see it happen all the time.

I would really appreciate anyone's thoughts/opinions on this. I am sorry I am keeping my identity a secret, but after this occurrence, I don't want to be banned from DIS for discussing homosexuality. I thought gays and lesbians were becoming more accepted in society these days, but after last night it seems not to be so, at least not at VMK.

Thanks for listening and for your opinions.

seems like vmk needs to make a decision, no BF/GF or allowing BF/BF and GF/GF relationships. i think vmk should just outlaw the whole taken thing.

Hmmm...Maybe VMK thought they were being srious about hooking upin rl.

Actually, the offense was probably here: My friend said something like "are you a kid? because I am not." The girl said "I'm not a kid".

They don't want us to say anything that might indicate how old we are. People have been warned for saying they had a job, for picking up their kids, etc.

I've never heard of there being a problem with being "merry" - and I've seen many occasions when they weren't referring to being married. My interpretation of the conversation was that they were talking about being gay.

You can come out of the Closet so to speak

The OWNER of the DIS is Gay...so I do doubt very seriously that you would get banned here.

I do not like the boyfriend/girlfriend stuff but if they are going to allow it then they should allow bf/bf & gf/gf as long as things stay non explicit/graphic and it does not get out of hand. By that I mean when someone says NO no is no in either instance.

Piratesmate hit the nail on the head it was probably a 2 hour ban because of the exchange of personal info not straight or gay thing.

I agree with this interpretation. This alone was sufficient, per the VMK anyhow, for a ban.

This was my first thought, too.

Actually, piratesmate may be correct.
I don't think that Disney really has that much of a problem with GLBT society. Heck, they've been boycotted by religious people for having "Gay Days" at the real parks. And I think that if they were banned for being lesbians, they would be setting a kind of double standard.

And tho society in some ways is more open to GLBT's, there are still many in this country that thinks it's immoral and wish to either ban or "save" these people. Just think of Bush and his policies and many of those who re-elected him.

Personally, I think that the conversation was fine. I have no issues with the GLBT society. My older sister has been in a lesbian relationship for several years and my boyfriend's friends are all women and gay men. :)

Okay, I'll come out of the closet. It was me. Thanks for your opinions. Had I known the owner was gay, I wouldn't have been in hiding but I just was not sure. I have asked many ppl if they are a kid before and I guess I shouldn't. Thing is, my friend has never gotten a warning before and shouldn't you get a bunch of those "do not give out personal info" warnings before you get the ban? I know I did. It's like VMK didn't even give her a chance with a warning. She is new and got banned without even ONE warning. I got my ban after like 5 (most of them I didn't give out or ask for personal info but a couple were from saying "are you kid or ancient" or something like that. I don't know about the other girls story yet.

I know Disney has the "gay day" b/c I have been (I am bisexual and most of my friends are gay), but I did not think it was sponsored by Disney.

Anyway, thanks for your responses! I'm still mad that she didn't even get a warning first....but I hope you guys are right and it's about the "are you a kid" thing.

P.S. I have heard "I am merry" many times and I always thought it meant "I am married." LOL. I didn't even think of it the other way!

P.P.S. cteddiesgirl, I should know this but what does the "T" in GLBT stand for???? Teens?

P.P.P.S. Off topic: Captain Brian, how do you do that glitter rollie thingy? I want one! :)

Transsexual. :)

Well, now I've heard everything. :sad2:

Let me just say that the opinions of a certain number of individuals do not matter to the rest of the world, so if society allows this kind of behavior IRL, then I have nothing to offer. For the record, I have never encountered any gay people. I've been accused of being so, but it's entirely untrue.

I think we should all write letters to VMK and tell them to either abolish all the BF/GF hookups, or create separate rooms on VMK for the adult players.

Eventually, people are going to find ways to abuse VMK, and when they do, the admins are going to go, "This was a mistake. We're going to have to shut VMK down."

Thanks for telling me about the "T" you two, and CB....I knew I'd be the 5th or millionth person to ask you, that's why I did it. I would "borrow" it but I want mine to be blue.....I tried to copy it but it isn't animated. I have no clue how to do animated gif's or whatever...

sigh

I basically just got it to tease PurpleDuck!lol

I wanted a red one...Oh well beggers can't be choosers. :rotfl2:

Just for the record, Disney does NOT endorse nor support "Gay Days" within the park. These are days set aside for members of outside organizations and groups to get together and go to Disney. The company does not endorse it at all. In fact, a few people I know that have been there during this time said how careful Disney is with it and even leaves notes under resort rooms' doors saying which parks are going to be "crowded" that day. They never mention what event it is, etc., but give this little note to guests.

I didn't think it was endorsed by Disney. Wouldn't want to ruin their wholesome image.

I think VMK should stop the whole bf/gf thing too. I have a brother in law who is gay. I do not judge him, but I have asked him to keep his sexuality to himself when he is around my DS9 (but I also expect the same thing from my straight family members too - there should be no overtly sexual displays from them either). I think VMK is trying to do the same thing within the game. But they should be the same way across the board. If they will block certain relationships, the should block all relationships. There are other things kids can be doing instead of trying to grow up too soon!
