So, let's say, you don't have a passport, you're a born-here US citizen. You planned on using your Driver's License and a certified copy of your Birth Certificate for ID. What happens if you get your license taken away, and have no government-issue picture ID? Since you cruise in 30 days, what do you use to get on the cruise?

I see you're in California. When I was there I got a state-issued ID card from the DMV - no relation to a driver's license, just a picture ID that is clearly an official Gov't identification card. All you need to get it is the birth certificate you mention (and probably $10 or so!)

Can you get a state-issued i.d. ? Michigan issues these for people that don't drive.

I checked on-line with the DMV - it takes 60 days to get that ID from them. I guess I'll call DCL & ask them what to do.

Get an expedited passport. You can get this ASAP for a fee, of course

Of course, I neglected to mention I got that CA ID in 1985, so it was an over-the-counter transaction! I guess with security issues these days they feel 60 days is acceptable.....

I'd go with the expedited passport - pricey, but worth it in the long run.

Thanks for the suggestions. I believe that I have a plan: get the certified copy of the BC (can't believe there isn't one in the house!) I will go with him to San Franicsco to serve as his identifying witness & apply for the expedited passport.

That is - if I let him live that long!!

If they haven't already taken it, can you tell them you lost it?

Probably the best thing to do would be to get an expidited passport as the other poster had suggested.

Just thought I'd warn you. We had a problem in 2000 - quite a long story but to keep it short - we didn't get the expedited passport for my son and had to cancel our flight to Asia.

Hopefully you won't have the same problem.

Also the State Department has stopped issuing passports on a same day basis, unless you HAVE to leave the country on an emergency and within 48 hours and have a ticket to prove you are leaving. A vacation doesn't qualify for a same day passport, a death does. You will have to file for an expediated passport, but again, they don't guarantee them. I wish you luck, and I'd try to file ASAP.

I'm curious - have you been able to resolve the photo ID in time for the cruise? It is probably a long shot but could plead with the court to give you custody of the license for ID purposes if you promise to return it upon your return back from vacation?

I would certainly hate to see you miss your long anticipated vacation over this.

Pixie Dust that this is pleasantly settled

To get an expediated passport you need to call an automated phone number and make an appt. You need to be traveling within 14 days. We are traveling on June 26 and went to the passport office yesterday and will pick up the passport on the 23rd. It was for my under 16 yr old ds and it cost $130 It will cost more if the person is over 16. There is a website that will give you the specifics for the San Fransisco area. I just looked up passport agencies and looked for the travel.state.gov website.

Good luck to you. I'm sure it will all work out.

minniecarousel : HI there!!! We live down 680 from you, Pleasanton!!

You may want to confirm by stopping by the post office in regards to the expedite passport. I belive for an extra fee as all the posters mentioned you can get a passport within 5 business days by dealing with the post office and the passport mailed to you home.

The SF passport office will not process you application unless if an emergency and as jel0511 said, vacations does not count. I had the unfortunate circumstance of visiting the SF passport office and it was only because PO sent me there. The case was that my MIL was terminaly ill and my passport expired. That took one day to process.

Good luck!!!

Looking at the date, I presume you may have already taken care of this.

My wife picked up an expedited passport prior to our vacation, in less than 2 weeks. Looking through the materials, we found that you cannot go and get a passport for a minor, expedited or not, without official written permission from the other parent or without the other parent being present at the time of application. Just a heads up in case anyone else needs to do this
