Serenity Bay?

Yep! If you rent equipment at Castaway Cay, you can bring it over to Serenity Bay, or you can bring your own. It's mostly sand, so fewer rock or coral formations, but we did see a sea turtle last time we were at Serenity Bay .

I enjoy snorkeling at Serenity Bay, especially when the tide is in, and have seen a green sea turtle (or it might have been a hawksbill), several types of rays, barracuda. lots of fish and sea stars. There are no Mickey statues on SB, just nature.

No. It's written on SB that it is open water and you can encounter sharks, stingrays, barracudas, jellyfish, sealice, etc.

Yes, it is the ocean. How many can say that they snorkeled on a private island in open waters? You can't do that with a net at the beach. LOL

Just use caution in any water you might be in, hydrate often and make sure to use the buddy system when going out.

We love to snorkel in Serenity Bay. Look for a white buoy a ways off shore - it marks an area where fish are, an underwater structure. The water is still pretty shallow there, depending on the tide of course. A very large stingray swam very close to shore as well - that was amazing to see!

You don't have to go very far to encounter them. This was 15-20 meters from the shore. Water was just over my hips (I'm 5'4").

And this is why you do the Stingray Shuffle.

The building where you pick up snorkeling gear is located at the first family beach, by the snorkeling lagoon.

Saw several stingrays at SB during most recent cruise (Dec. 2014); they were almost graceful as they moved through the water. When they approached, most people stopped what they were doing, watched them go by, and resumed play when they'd passed. I found the rocks to be more treacherous than the marine life, as I cut the bottom of my foot on a sharp rock that blended with the ocean floor. I highly recommend water shoes (or, in my case, I grabbed my Chacos immediately afterward).

I've gotten the impression now that snorkeling gear really isn't included in SB cabanas, although I suspect they wouldn't object to me picking some up. That said, I'll probably just buy a cheap set. Thanks for the answer either way.

Watershoes will afford no protection against stingray barbs. They can penetrate the shoes, and many times people are struck in the ankle and leg up to the knee. It is no reason to avoid the water, just shuffle your feet as noted above.
