I saw it and I agree with you....but I'm because it seems awfully funny to have McEnroe comment about sportsmanship.

I saw it too and Serena's behavior was out of line. Had she kept her cool, she may have been able to ask that the call be reviewed. Then it would have been clear that the line judge was wrong. She had already been in trouble because she threw down her racket at the end of a game. Total spoiled brat behavior
You could tell Serena was very frustrated because Kim Clijsters was outplaying her.
If a man acts this way, then he should get called on it too. It's never ok to act this way.

Tennis is big business with enormous amounts of money at stake. At this level it is no longer a sport. Treat it accordingly.

Agreed. Serena Williams had every reason to be upset. I don't get where everyone is saying this young woman never has had "class", she has always seemed down to earth and genial. This is her lively hood and that idiot judge that couldn't get it right, was tampering with it.

Tennis is a sport, like any other sport it has officals. Whether the line judge was right or wrong an athelete never has the right to threaten with physical violence.
If you can't deal with referees, judges or umps, don't play a sport.

Hope this doesn't work in the non sports world, a sure way to tamper with your livlihood is to threaten your boss. LOL

While the past may have included the likes of McEnroe and Connors, these days the USTA is trying to tamp down on bad behavior and I am very glad about it. For one thing, kids watching professional matches shouldn't be taught that this behavoir is acceptable. At the same time, even at the lower levels of USTA play (my ds is a ranked juniors player) there is now a conduct form that must be signed by player and parent before each and every tournament. Throw a racquet, curse and yell, show up late, and the player is assessed penalty points. Points add up to being docked in the score or being suspended from playing at all for a while. Parents who yell and argue can get suspended from the games as well. It is NICE to see when this happens (suspensions) because some of the behavior I've seen is absolutely riduculous!!! So, more power to the USTA!

Which says a lot about us doesn't it. And then we have no idea why kids want to emmulate these people.
They get the message loud and clear, "As long as I am an athelete bringing a championship to my city, I can rape, abuse any one and every one in any kind of fashion and still get paid"

The difference is that when those people act idiotic, it isn't in public so the whole world doesn't see how stupid they are. Yes, classless is a word. It means boorish which exactly describes Serena's behavior.

Why is it okay for men players to get upset and have no negative action taken but when it's a female player she loses the point which cost her the match?

I agree 100%! She had a total meltdown and the judge was wrong anyway! She was in the moment and it was a crucial, crucial match point.

I would be upset as well. Sometimes in the moment you say those things because she was pumped up and wanting to win the match.

Threatening someone and cursing like a sailor because you're upset is not ok. She may not be able to play in the Australian Open and it would serve her right. As you tell a naughty child when they're punished for misbehaving," Next time you might think twice before you act."

She is completely classless. Bad calls are a part of sport and while you can disagree, and even vocally disagree, threatening the judge is wrong. She should have been arrested on the sport for threatening bodily harm.
