Seqouia NP to DLR - another when should we leave

We will be driving down to DLR on Wed July 15th this summer for our first family trip. We would prefer to leave about 1-2pm or later (to fit n a morning hike) and arrive by 8pm for early bed but are flexible.

Realistic or will we be hitting massive traffic? Google maps show 4 hours.

I am considering stopping outside LA for dinner to wait out the rush hour. Is that a good idea? If so, where would be good?

Getting nervous about crazy LA traffic.

you're realistic. I'm south of Fresno in the Valley and we run about 4 hours for a trip to DL. Enjoy the park, our big trees are simply breathtaking!

Talked to hubby and he is not enthused about sitting in traffic jams for up to 2 hours. If we choose to have dinner somewhere just before the traffic starts (Burbank? Santa Clarita?), will it calm down if we get back into the car at say...7pm?
