September 30, 2012 - "To San Francisco and Beyond"

Just got my reservation # this morning, yay! I've been on "My Cruise" and got the kids signed up for the Kid's Club but don't see where to sign up for Dine and Play...?

Congrats !!!

Sorry for all the basic questions, it's our first cruise!

We just read the "What should I wear to dinner?" FAQ and hubby is not keen on the dress code... will he be out of place w/ a dress shirt and tie or does he really need to bring a suit jacket? Besides not loving to dress up, he's not happy about the extra space that dress shoes will take up, LOL. And he's worried about the suit jacket wrinkling badly in our luggage.

And speaking of clothes, do you think we'll want to wear shorts and short sleeves or pants and light sweaters? I guess if I were just going to SoCal, I'd bring a mix but I was wondering if the ships tend to be on the cooler side or ??

Thanks!

I can't remember if every man wore a jacket. I'm think you'll find some that don't. Hopefully someone who's been aboard more recently will answer you as well.

Those who want to stay in shorts and t-shirts and avoid the whole dress up thing can dine at the Beach Blanket Buffet . We've eaten a number of breakfasts and lunches there buy have always wanted to enjoy the special ambiance of the dining rooms at dinner time.

My DH sees the cruise as an opportunity to dress up and in the past has brought a suit and a tux. That was back when luggage was free. The three of us arrived with 5 bags and went home with 6. On JetBlue we get 3 bags free... curious how this is going to work out.

The cruise is when we get our family formal photos. I discovered that you can have the laundry do "press only" much better than worrying about my dress or his suit.

We dress go to Palo as well. Yet another chance for photos. NO SHORTS in Palo they will not seat you !

I'm thinking it could be cool in San Francisco and the coast can also get morning fog from SD to SF. I'm thinking we'll need more layers than for Caribbean trips. Now I'll need 7 bags :confused3

Check out

Can someone shed light on SF weather?

I's seeing contradictory info. Frommer's: Oct temp - High 64/Low 53. Then I found theweatherwiz.com/ It predicts we'll have days in the 70's but the description reads partly cloudy and cool :confused3

You don't have to sign up for dine and play. If you have late seating the kids club will come down to pick up all the kids. Just tell your servers that your kids want to do the dine and play. The servers will then make sure to get your kids food promptly so they can head out. It's one of my favorite things about the Disney Cruise and my boys love it. :yay: It's also a great incentive to get them to eat. :rolleyes1

Per DCL:
On 7-night cruises:

First night: cruise casual—no shorts, swimwear or tank tops
Three additional "cruise casual" nights—no shorts, swimwear or tank tops
One pirate or tropical night (deck party)
One formal and one semi-formal night—formal wear for men: tuxedo or suit; for women: gown or dress; semi-formal wear for men: suit/jacket; for women: dress or pantsuit.

Dress code at Palo on all cruises:

Men: dress pants and shirt or jacket
Women: dress or pantsuit
Please no jeans, shorts, capri pants, flip-flops or tennis shoes

Some people will dress up.
I was on 2 DCl cruises last year. Many men just had on shirt and tie for formal and semi formal night.

Casual nights- you can wear khaki, jeans, capris, etc.....

Pirate night- I have seen people in shorts in the dining room.

Came across rapidshuttle.net. Private transport but much cheaper than most others... any experience w/ them? Thanks!

I know it costs more but I'm leaning towards private transport of some kind to get from LAX to the Port. Of course, I'm looking for the lowest price possible in that category. Any recommendations from personal experience? TIA.

Thanks for your reply!

Can you tell me more about this? Is it like a service to 'send out' your formal clothes for pressing? How do you do it and how much is it? Thanks!

Thanks. That's what I wanted to know- if hubby could 'get away with' only wearing shirt and tie and leave the suit jacket home. He doesn't love to dress up anyway and when you add the fact that we're paying for every bag to fly there/home, we're worried about space, too. As it is, he's not happy he has to bring dress shoes (again, a space issue). Speaking of shoes, what do people wear during the day (not dinner, I know that's dress up) when they're just hanging out on the ship?

Whatever you are most comfortable in! I've seen (and worn) everything, from flip flops to heels. Not a lot of bare feet, but, correct me if im wrong, I've never seen any rules against it. No one ever said anything when I slipped my jandals off for a bit! :thumbsup2

And speaking of dress code...has anyone tried the tux rentals?

We rented one unintentionally on our last cruise... I left DHs suit on the back of the door at home. :confused3

You're supposed to pre-order, but luckily Disney carries some spares aboard ship. They came to our cabin, measured and fixed him up fast. He looked great in our friend's wedding photos!

Disney offers dry cleaning / laundry just like a nice hotel. :laundy:

There was a statement printed at the bottom of the form about press only. In 2009, it was 1/2 of the cleaning price listed for the individual item. I don't remember the long list of prices and items... but if cleaning a specific garment was $10, press only was $5. It seems to me I had 3-4 items done under $20.

We always get grief about cruising too much. We like to cruise at least once a year. Preferably 2 times.
It makes us happy and it is our families preferred vacation.

My husband can keep his cell phone off and not be able to be contacted for work.

I don't have to cook or clean.

I live just south of Detroit. So, it is a long drive to WDW or a cruise port.

Next summer, we are planning a two week driving cross country trip.
My daughter thinks that we are going to stop at DL during the trip. :rotfl2:

LOL,
This is going to be our 3rd cruise this year with 2 booked for next year (Caribbean and Baltic - both on Celebrity) We haven't told to many people that this vacation is another cruise as they will think we are nuts.

Agree that cruises are a great way to relax - no phone, no Internet, no trying to decide where to eat and how to get where ever you are traveling to.

We have tried explaining this to my father in law. He just doesn't understand.

This might be a silly question but I have read that some rooms do not have a dresser or trunk, do any have a closet? I am just wondering where we will hang DH's suit and my dress?:confused3
