September 29, 2012 - Ropin' Some Magic in the Western Caribbean

Is anyone else having trouble booking the Turtle Farm on Grand Cayman? I'm trying to book from their website.

We don't homeschool either. I was feeling the same way though. :) We have pulled my son out of school every year since he started kindergarten (he's now going into fifth grade). It just works out better for us- we usually go the week of his birthday in November, but we got such a good rate this cruise that we switched it up.

I took our daughter out of school for a week last year to go to DisneyLand and I received a letter from the Absentee Court. The school secretary told me that if she had been absent due to "illness", she would have been excused. Mind you, this was pre-K. Oh well...what ya gonna do? I say, a Disney cruise was in order this year. :cool1:

I called my daughter's secretary before we even booked the cruise to make sure I could take her out for so long...that was back when I thought she was going to be going all day every day... secretary told me family vacations are excused... I figured hey it's kindergarten... what is she going to miss? Painting and coloring? She can do that on the boat :P

We have to pause our cruise planning and FE making day tomorrow. :worried: Why? ISAAC...... Oh please oh please stop moving west immediately! So sorry Florida, but New Orleans doesn't need ISAAC. (and neither does Galveston!!!) I guess we'll be on pins and needles for the next 48 hours. Yard cleaning day tomorrow. Still no cruise documents either.

Hope all works out well for you!!

Unfortunately, once the kids are enrolled in a public school, even pre-k is subject to the same rules. The court letters are computer generated. Don't let them bother you unless the kids miss lots and lots of days. To me, the experiences and memories children make with their parents on a vacation are priceless and worth missing school--and this is coming from a retired teacher.

We have been very lucky to have teachers like you who feel the same way. My son missed a ton of school last year due to illness and we have spent the summer running him to specialists to try to figure out what is causing it. We made sure he kept up with his work last year and he never fell behind so it hasn't been an issue. I figure he deserves this time away from doctors and to have some fun.

It looks like we need 12 more people for the Beauties and Beasts event. It sounds like a lot of fun! Here is the sign-up sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AjT2D3FyenWQdDNrQjJoVzRPSGQ2UGltLTRaWklkckE#gid=0

In another week, the FE latecomers list will close. It has a good number of cabins participating - 12 as of today. Anyone wanting to join, now is the time!! https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Au04YNSwAgnodGlZb3Q3UkpYZVlxYkJ1SEV2Wjc4YVE#gid=0

You can sign up on the FE list for the wristbands. I have made a separate list for wristbands only at the bottom of the list. I've "grayed out" the areas you don't need to fill out. If you don't want to participate in the FE, you are still welcome to come to the DisMeet and to wear the Tshirts and to get the wristbands!!

pixiedust:pixiedust:pixiedust: Good Luck.. I've been through several of those pesky hurricanes when I lived near Galveston. Such an inconvenience. Finally got my docs yesterday...

I think the experience of visiting foreign countries is a good lesson for them. Some things you can't learn in school.

How do we pay for the wristbands? I am happy to pay now, I hate thinking that someone is paying out of pocket for my wristbands.

Also, please, please, please sign up for the Beauties and the Beasts event - I think it will be so fun! I've done the tasting offered by DCL on past cruises and it is great, so to do it with friends would be even better. :cool1::yay:

I hope I didn't offend anyone talking about pulling kids out of school! I taught first grade before my son was born, and I ALWAYS was in favor of parents pulling out kids for vacations :-) Family memories are way more important than some math pages and spelling for a few days. And that stinks that the school would send a truancy type letter. Boo!

We are Homeschoolers and I was looking at The Mayans Through The Ages Tour in CM. I have a 7 &14 yrold is anyone else doing this tour, or who has done it? I figured it would be fun and a bit educational.

Got our cruise docs earlier this week. Getting so excited! only 36 Days till we sail. Hubby decided he's going on the cruise too.

Getting so excited!! Almost finished with FE's and working on my packing list and finishing up some last minute projects! I can't believe in just over a month we will be setting sail!

thanks Belle6000 for the info. BTW we homeschool too! I have DD 15, DS 12, DD 9.
Kimmysue.. we live in Belton,TX your close to us. We have three kids as well.

Hi Cruising5 - sorry I was off Disboards for awhile and I'm trying to catch up. Glad to see older kids in this group. My kids aren't homeschooled but are on Fall Break for two weeks so this is our favorite time to vacation!! Yeah, Belton isn't that far away; we live in Pflugerville just north of Austin. Are you driving the day of the trip or going to Galveston early??

Hey Kim, You are Michelle's sister in law right? We met at the baby shower!

Are you driving down the day before? We are and are staying at the Hilton.

We are homeschoolers too. We are doing the Mayan ruins and Cozumel highlights excursion in Cozumel. I chose to see the ruins there since we'll be in port longer than we would in Costa Maya. This was the one excursion everyone in my family agreed on from the beginning! :) That's 2 adults, a 14 yr. old boy and a 9 yr. old girl! That doesn't happen very often anymore!!:goodvibes

I have a friend who went on a Carnival cruise not long ago and did the Cozumel Mayan tour. She said it was great. They didn't stop in Costa Maya though so I don't know anything about that one.

Does anyone know if Formal Night will also be the night when they do the "golden mickeys" or whatever?
Trying to decide if we should do Palo that night or not.

Hey Stacey, Yes, I'm Michelle's sister-in-law and we did meet at the shower back in March. I've been wondering about you and your friends; so glad I got all your disboard names from our FB chat. Now I can keep track of you guys on this thread.

No, we are driving down the morning of the cruise which makes me a little nervous. I've never been on a cruise without being at the port city the day before but it should be okay. My husband is at a training seminar in North Carolina until the 28th so he flies home that night and we sail the next day.
