September 2, 2012 - Magic - NYC to Canada

Weclome aboard Barb. I am a life long NYer. Granted I dont live in Manhattan, but I have worked here for nearly 20 years.

Let me try to make it simple for you. Much of manhattan is a grid.

AVENUES
Avenues run north south and are generally numbered from first avenue in on the east side to twelfth avenue on the west side. There are some non numbered north south avenues that are not part of the numbering scheme (Park Avenue and Broadway being two biggies) and some avenues that go by names but replaced a numbered street (Madison Ave is really 4th Ave and Avenue of the Americas is really 6th Ave).

STREETS
Run east - west starting with 1st St to the south and well into the 100s in the north. The walking distance from one street to the next is much shorter then from one avenue to another. The above streets and avenue system only works when you are north of Greenwich Village. Once you go below Greenwich Village, named and odd shaped streets prevail. Neighborhoods like Little Italy, Chinatown, Soho, the Wall St / Ground Zero area are all outside the grid system.

Penn Station, Times Sq / Theatre District and the Cruise Terminal are all in the grid. Penn Station is at 34th St & 7th Ave. The cruise terminal is at 55th St and 12th Ave. As a generality, you are sort of outside the tourist / hotel zone when you are beyond 8th Ave(higher than 8th Ave). I would also say that anything in the 40s or 50s (streets) would fall in the typical tourist / hotel zone (times sq / theatre district). So I would stay in 5th-8th Ave in the 40s-50s.

As for what to do in one day... that is a tough call. Personally, I would try to visit the Statue of Liberty (even if just passing by on a boat). If you want to see a Bway show, I would just but half price tickets on the day of show from TKTS which is located at 47th St and 7th Av. You may want to hang for a bit in Times Sq (at nite). Museums are an option esp if the weather is bad. Walk the Brooklyn Bridge. Empire State Bldg. Lots to consider. Try to do some on Fri nite if you are not too tired.

Lots to do... not enough time. Enjoy!

Hello Again!

I think I can find my way around the city with your explanation of the grid! (We just have a main street and then north or south of it!) But, after looking on a GOOGLE map, I can't get my bearings as to what areas/things are close to each other. The hotels are listed by "near to or in..... area". So what would be the best area to be in for a hotel that is a reasonable taxi fare from the port and from PENN Station? And then what attractions would we be near for walking or close by on a subway? (We're going to be brave and take the subway somewhere! LOL) Is TIMES Square a location I should look at? OR am I expecting too much and there isn't a good central location for me?
THANKS for your help!!!
Barb :wave2:

Welcome aboard to all the new comers to this cruise!! Looking forward to seeing you all! :goodvibes

I think a hotel that advertises as being in the Times Square or theatre district area would be centrally located.

Sue and I look forward to meeting up with you guys!!! These 2 cruises should be a lot fun! :thumbsup2

Rich, Amanda and I look forward to meeting you as well. Our son is joining us on the Mediterrean but not this one. We are going to have a blast!!:cool1:

That map is very helpful for us as well! Thank you!

You're welcome! I actually have an underutilized undergraduate degree in Geography (no joke). So I am happy to put it to use for you guys.

If you want me to add other items to the map, let me know!

I hope you guys will keep us filled in on what's going on over there, I don't have facebook. Thanks!! :goodvibes

Yes, I don't use my facebook account for meets, either. I can't participate in FE (the luggage situation is going to be tight since I'm sort of B2B with the 7 night Fantasy cruise), but I'd be interested in a general meet & greet (other cruise meet threads I've participated in have had one in the Promenade Lounge before the muster drill, for example).

we will be closing the FE list to newbies in one week (July 15). If we get requests to join the FE after then... I will add you to the list as a "provisional member". "Provisional members" may not get a gift from everyone as some folks are pre-ordering items and they will only be ordering for the number of folks that are on the list on July 15. I hope everyone understands.

Also, since I expect this cruise to hardly be full, I suspect many of us will be offered room upgrades at when we check-in. Unless they offer me a Cat 1 at a steal, I plan to stay in room 6120 (since we have a sentimental attachment to that particular stateroom). If you change rooms, please note the room change on the white board on my stateroom door, and I will communicate the change to the other FE participants.

Latest FE list (please let me know if I have any of the information wrong):
GEHRINGDH - DH/DW(Susann)/DS(18)/DS(10)/DD(6)/DS(5) - 2635 & 2637

Phew! Got in just under the wire! We'd like in to the FE Exchange :)
Heather (37) and Brian (40). Complete Disney nuts, but it's our first cruise, so we're newbies. We're booked in 8028 :)
Edited to add that I sent a FB request to join the group as well
