Sometimes I quietly despair about the youth of America. Today I am inspired as I read this inspirational post for any budding entrepreneur or someone thinking about being an entrepreneur written by our nephew Rob.

The Last 5 Years

I write about this, as I reflect on the challenge of personal time vs. startup time as Viddler turns into a 5 year+ activity.

Going from a sprint and then switching into marathon mode mid race has had it’s challenges and changes in mindset.. Here’s some of it..

2006. Fresh out of Lehigh, 22 years old, pushing on Viddler as a startup in the first year, it was 100% Viddler and everything else is including family and friends went on hold. I even stopped drinking a sip of alcohol for a year straight during this period. We raise minimal funds. With less than a $100k budget we launch Viddler.

2007. Second year, still 100%, yet I might have returned phone calls to parents back home in California and went out every month or so. Investors like growth but only commit to 3 months of runway at a time. Very stressful, but push hard and more committed then ever. I remember going to sleep at 2am and waking up at 8am during this time.

2008. Third year, like shingles falling from a space shuttle, it starts to wear down. Still very committed to Viddler in Bethlehem, PA but it’s hard to maintain a nice balance with family in California and no significant salary to take many trips back home to see them. The 6 sleep schedule begins to take it’s tole as I drink 3 coffee’s and 2 Monster drinks per day… I have heart flutters. I see a doctor who tells me to sleep more and take less caffeine. Also during this period, I am starting to realize I have aged faster then any other point in my life.

2009. Fourth year, the hardest. It seems like a second ago I was in college and had many friends in arms reach. That all seems distant. Viddler needs the more focus then ever to get cashflow positive, yet family life needs attention too. True tension at it’s highest. I think many times to when I tore my ACL/MCL/PCL and came back for fourth year against doctors recommendation to play football. I can do this. Still not profitable. Investors are pushing for profitability and it’s been 3 years, 3 months at a time. It’s starting to take it’s tole.

2010. Fifth year, break profitability. It’s a relief. No longer beholden to the next round of investors. Still no expendable income for personal activities and employees around me deserve salary bumps more then I do due to shared sacrifice over last 4 years. I tell myself “if this becomes a big exit I can spend much more time with family/friends then ever before later in life”. Sleep schedule is nice though. I start to wake up when I want to and leave work when I feel I need to. I start running 5 miles a day, and get in control of my health.

I don’t write this to vent at all. I feel very fortunate in so many ways to be where I am at today…..

To be honest, have been inspired by Zappos audiobook lately and the amount of self awareness and transparency Tony Hsieh provides. I write this to provide insight into what life has been like last 5 years so others may get a glimpse into the shifts in mindset as a startup scrappishly mature

You should be very proud Noel, he sounds like a determined man, I wish him every success :goodvibes

OK, This thread is so slow I have been out recruiting! Our next door neighbours are now booked on the WBTA. She is joining Dis as we speak, Her name is Giselle, Please make her welcome, Thanks guys!

For your previous WBTA cruisers... the more I read, the more questions I have regarding dining. What would you suggest for parents with little ones? Early or late dining?

I think of time change, seeing the show, and I read about "expediting" the meal so children can go to the club. I can already tell our younger daughter will be the "laid back" child versus our older daughter. On all of our cruises, we have always had late dining except for one, as we enjoyed visiting with tablemates and taking our time. With this being our first cruise with the girls, I feel like I'm re-learning how to cruise. :confused3 We are booked for early dining now, but the more I think about it, I want to switch it to late (and possibly use the nursery for our 15-month old). Any guidance from what you saw on your WBTA?? (I can totally see our 5-year-old ditching us for the fast meal option - and most importantly, we want those dining around us to have pleasant dining experiences)

I think you have more or less decided!!!

I was going to say go to early with having such young children, but then realised you are thinking of using the nursery for your youngest when you are eating. Some of the kiddies at late dining were very tired indeed and one or two had meltdowns. Really some would have been better off in bed.

You just have to do what works for you.

We have chosen early dining for the first time in 7 cruises as it was just so late at 8.30, and sometimes it was 10.30 before we had finished. I felt like having a meltdown myself some nights.:rotfl2:

I heard back from Carys today. She is still on the cruise but very busy with things.

She did say it is ok for someone to start a new thread, but I reiterated that if she did still want to head it then we didn't want to push her out.

Karen, any news about your holiday request yet?

Just checking in to say hello to everyone :goodvibes.

I have just realised that we will be able to book our return flight to the UK very soon. We booked with miles last time as single flights are very expensive. I have just been talking to Carl (DH), about how long we are going to stay in Florida, post cruise this time !!.
We stayed at Saratoga Springs, for 2 weeks after the T.A this year and loved it there. I know we dont have to book anything yet if we don't want to, but I love being organised. :).

Me too Jan, I love organising it too. Have you decided how long you will be staying? I'm not sure how long we will stay this time, but will make a decision soon so we can book the flight. We are probably going to rent a villa again, though we do have some DVC points to use first. We love SSR too.

Glad you heard back from Carys and that she is still cruising with us, hopefully she will join in again when she is not so busy. :)

I've been trying to book my VA miles only return flight but so far they haven't released any miles only flights the whole of August & September next year. I hope they do release some soon as I hate playing the waiting game, I need to have everything organised & booked asap....it's my OCD side! (Hence my tag from the tag fairy. :lmao:)

Noel - Please start your welcome wagon message again!

I would love to start a list for the welcome wagon. What my welcome wagon post was mostly for people to know about events and who to contact.

We don't really have anything organized but if people want to start organizing some events, I will be happy to start a welcome wagon post.

The meltdown is my dreaded fear. We have definitely had those late late dinners with lingering visiting! We also need to try not to eat and go straight to bed -- more for OUR sakes than the kids'. Maybe I'll just flip a coin ...

We flew Virgin before Sarah was born and loved it!!! Then did BMI to Edinburgh. We'll be on AA this time though.

We were on the WBTA and had late dining, my girls were 8 and 9. At the beginning of the cruise they were good, but then you need to add an hour over a few days for the time zone changes and towards the end of the cruise they were very tired indeed. Actually we were all very tired. Having said that we have chosen late again as during the day there is so many activities that some days we weren't even ready for dinner by 8:30, also remember when your in port you need to get back early for dinner if your on early seating. I just don't like to rush, so late suits us better, if the kids are way too tired, take them to Topsiders early, then send them to kids club to lie on the beanbags and watch a movie, my girls loved doing that. :thumbsup2

Hey, we were at SSR for 12 nights after the cruise, over in the Springs.
We're not doing WDW this time, just a couple of days shopping then home. Was too hard to be away from work that long as we run our own business.

I would love to start a list for the welcome wagon. What my welcome wagon post was mostly for people to know about events and who to contact.

I know Noel, not much to put in the welcome yet, I just miss your big blue post with everything in there. Once somebody officially takes on the roll of 'Captain' we can start organising a bit more. We definitely need FE's! Anyone thought about lanyards, or possibly the wrist bands like Krisann did? What does everyone think of the Candy/Choc swap....for us, we had waaaayyyy toooooo much chocolate and ended up giving it all to our servers. Anyhoo, looking forward to starting the process soon......:goodvibes

OK, I'm having a dilemma about flights. Seems I can book a VA return (Orlando - London) for almost HALF the cash than a one way MCO-LGW flight!!!

SO should I just do that and not take up the return flight? OR will I get into trouble with Sir Richard Branson??

It's such a flippin' puzzle...

We had the same dilemma with our LAX to Brisbane (Oz) flight last time, Here's what I found out.
Many people do book a return flight and 'burn' one way, ie - not use it. The rule is they can charge you if you don't use it, they would charge you the difference between the return and the one way plus a penalty. But, it is done alot and I couldn't find anyone that had been charged or in trouble.
One thing I would say is make sure the end that you would be 'burning' is the second part of the ticket, if you don't show for the first part they may cancel your ticket. Hope this helps, the rules may not be the same for all airlines, but that's what I found with ours. :goodvibes

The one way fares are such a huge pain. We should have enough points to use them again if there are any, and no doubt from Miami again. Otherwise we will go with Aer Lingus I would think.

Do you think you will be blacklisted if you don't turn up for a return flight? ;) I know you shouldn't do it the other way as they would just cancel the return part if you don't show for the outbound! John was wondering about booking the return from Orlando for this year before I remembered the reward flight.
