Sept. 7, 2012 - Magic NYC - Canada

For those of you renting cars in Halifax, who are you renting from? I have a good deal through Priceline with Hertz, but I'm not sure how close to the pier the office is. We come in pier 21, correct?

We are renting for Avis on Grafton St. I got a good rate through Costco.

Same here. We got a good rate through triple a at Avis. We also rented the gps because we don't have a clue where we are going!

In the final days of our countdown - waiting til tomorrow to get the suitcases out!

We are going to probably call from the shop. Haven't really thought about it because our phones don't work in Canada. We are going to follow tom's tour with some minor deviations.

Yes, I am doing the same thing this weekend packing. I gotta dig out the winter gear as well.

Winter gear?!? It's still summer. We aren't sailing to the arctic.

LOL!

The temperatures in Halifax in September range between 64°F to 50°F . The temperatures in New Brunswick range between 64°F to 46°F. You might get a few low 70 days early in Sept. I live in CT. Anything in the 60's is mild and spring-like for me. However, My aunt and uncle in Miami will call me when it reaches 68 degrees to tell me that they are FREEZING in Miami. :rotfl2: I guess it all depends on your idea of what's cold.

Thanks Erin, I think I already had you name. I think you also said you would have a guide dog with you (is that right)? If so, can I please get the dog's name also. Crazy, I know.

Thanks,
Linda

Hi Linda,
My mom's guide dog will be with us. She's a long haired German Shepherd. However, I can't give out her name. It's really important that people don't speak to the dog, and we find that most people can't control the urge when they know her name! :-)

Don't be embarrassed - there's a first time for everyone - you can catch up on the cruise since they are free (well not free, but included in the cruise fare)
We should include a mickey bar at the meet and greet on the first day - I could order room service and bring them to the meet!
Tammy

I have not had a Mickey bar in a few years.
Tammy, great idea to have them at the meet and greet - can you order enough from room service for everyone :rotfl2:.
Linda

This sounds like a great idea! I've never ordered one on the cruises I've been on in the past. :mickeybar :mickeybar :mickeybar :mickeybar

The 10 day forecast is showing highs in the mid 70s for Halifax and low 70s for Saint John. I'm planning to bring a fleece sweatshirt. Maybe hat and gloves. I think full winter gear would be over-kill; although I did consider it for a bit :-)

While this is true, but when I hear 'winter gear' I expect to see people in parkas and heavy boots.

Since we are going early in the month I don't expect to see temps in the 40's during the day.

I've been away for a while again. I can't believe we leave next week (we should be having lunch by this time!)

Add us to the people renting from Avis. Are we the only crazy ones looking to walk there? It's less than 8/10 of a mile away, and according to Tom's Cruise Guides, it takes Avis almost half an hour to come get you. I figure we can definitely be at Avis in that amount of time. DH wants to get back to the ship to watch football, so our compromise is that we get off the ship early (and he has to buy me lobster for lunch.)

Now a question for the ladies. What are you packing? We spend two weeks in Alaska this summer with only one suitcase each. I couldn't bring nearly all of the clothes and shoes that I wanted to bring, so now I feel like I'm going to overpack for a 5 night cruise. I highly recommend the packing cubes that I read about on these boards--they were great even for my formalwear.

I know it's still a week away, but has anyone seen a weather report?

Thanks, and see you all soon.

Lauri

Oops, must have been typing when you posted this. Thanks.

I am originally from Buffalo so I wear shorts and capris till it hits below 50. Winter gear I meant a hat and gloves. I moved to Va last winter and I think people thought I was crazy because they would be bundled up and I would be in shorts. The weather in Halifax and saint John seems to be beautiful but with those ocean currents you never know! I am thinking a few pairs of jeans, a quilted vest and a hat and gloves! Otherwise it is going to be capris and pants for dinner. A dress for the semiformal night and palo's and that's it!

I really was expecting to see someone wearing a parka and boots. LOL!

I'll bring a sweatshirt, because I take one no matter what time of year we cruise and no matter the destination. I'll probably bring a light rain jacket just in case. That's all I took to Alaska last year to wear on a glacier so no need to take a heavier jacket to Canada.

Someone posted, not sure if here or on FB, that they were having problems cancelling an excursion. I was having similar problems, but with the help of a wonderful Cruise Planner, now know how to do. When you view your cruise activities, select the day to see the list of activities. Do not select, "modify!" At the bottom of the pop up window, select "View Details." This will take you to a screen with a complete description of the activity, your name, time, etc. and it is only here that you have the option to cancel the activity. Hope this helps, it was frustrating...:)

I'm an owner of a long haired shepherd....currently on my second one....so I'm partial to the breed. I'm so glad you explained that we should not speak to the dog. I would have been all over the dog, had I not known. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm curious, is it the name or the familiarity of knowing the name that causes people to want to speak to the dog?

My job involves working with parents who have infants and toddlers with disabilities. At a recent training session, we invited a family who had graduated from our training project and had recently received a service dog from Guiding Eyes for the Blind Heeling Autism Program. It was very hard to resist the urge to talk or touch this remarkable dog, and I think in addition to knowing the name, people are drawn to how smart and special they are.

The dogs trained for the Heeling Autism Program are required to protect the child by preventing them from 'bolting' which is a serious problem for many children with autism. But similar to all animals trained to work with children or adults with disabilities or sensory impairments, they are 'working' and distractions can prevent them from doing the job they are trained to do.

The Guide Dog Foundation has a wonderful "Etiquette" sheet they have developed of dos and don'ts when around service animals.

Has anyone been able to determine the optimum time to visit the reversing falls on Monday Sept 10, in order to actually see the 'reversing'?
Thanks

:smickey: HAPPY LABOR DAY WEEKEND :smickey:

It's hard to believe that the Labor Day holiday is here already! Where did summer go - while I'm glad it is here because it means that we are that much closer to the cruise, I am sad to see summer come to an end.

Anyone have special plans for the Holiday? We are going to Hersheypark on Monday.

Got my pedicure and hair colored today. So I guess that means I am ready to go. Clothes are all gathered and in piles, just waiting to go in the suitcase on Thursday.
