Sept. 7, 2012 - Magic NYC - Canada

I'm so mad and upset with DCL right now, I halfway want to cancel this cruise. I"m not going to, but I almost want to.

We ALWAYS stay in the same stateroom. We had it reserved for this cruise too. It's 5122.

Today, I went online and looked at my ressies and now I'm no longer in 5122. Now I'm only a GTY without an assigned room. AND there are no other rooms left in my category.

I emailed my TA and should hear back tomorrow. If they don't fix it, I'm going straight to the mouse to complain. haha.:laughing:

How can they do this? If you booked a specific cabin number, how can they move you to GTY? I better check cause I booked 5020 specifically!!

I see 5122 available!! Why is it available? Hurry and call someone to get it back!!

Well we're practically neighbors.....I was born in Hempstead and John was born in Rockville Centre. I grew up in Selden in Suffolk and John grew up in Bellmore.

How long did you live in Uniondale? Is that where you are now? We definitely must meet up for a drink and chat. Where are you staying the night before the cruise. We should try and meet. If not then, maybe we can plan a meeting onboard.

Judy won't check back until tonight, so I'll answer for her. She lived in Uniondale from when she was born to when she went to college in '72. Her family then moved to Syosset. I lived in the Five Towns from high school until we got married. We now live north of the city in Rockland County, so we will be staying at the Canetti Hotel the night before the cruise :lmao:

Not sure when and how long you lived in Hempstead, but my dad owned House of Billiards on Main Street, across from A&S.

I just got off the phone with DCL....they said that 5122 was never booked. They said that no room was ever assigned by my TA. So they showed it as a GTY. BUT the couldn't explain to me WHY when I looked up all my ressies online it showed 5122 initially and then switched to GTY.

Either way, they fixed it. Now I'm definitely in my room. So this teaches me not to trust what the DCL website shows under my ressies. I need to call them to verify after I'm booked with my TA.

I'm so glad I checked it and got to fix it quickly.

Hi Sandy. So you and Judy are both just like me and John. We stayed on LI until we got married and then moved out. I think the commute into the city is a lot easier from Rockland County. Where is the Canetti Hotel located? We will be staying near the cruise terminal. Would it be more convenient to meet in the City or onboard? We love the BBCs at Promenades!!!!

I only lived in Hempstead for a short while. We moved to Levittown after that and when I was about seven years old we moved to Suffolk County. But I have to tell you, the House of Billiards on Main Street and the A&S sound very familiar. My grandparents lived in Hempstead for a long while and I spent a lot of time at their house.

It truely is a small world.

Glad it all got resolved. As soon as I read about your dilemma, I jumped on my ressie and made sure our room still showed up.

The Canetti Hotel (aka our humble abode) is in Suffern. If people want to meet the night before, it's easy for me, since I work in the city. Matter of fact, for those of you coming in a day or more early, you can get all your photo needs at my store (okay, it's not mine per se, I just work there) B&H Photo and Video on 34th St. and Ninth Ave. That's ajust a little plug :thumbsup2

House of Billiards started in Hempstead then expanded to a sporting goods store. IN the early 70s, we move to the corner of Hempstead Tpke and Hicksville Rd., Diagonally across from Jolly Rogers (remember that place?) I used to wrok there summers and holidays during my high school years. I remember biking all the way from North Woodmere and now that I look back on that, I think "what was I, nuts?"

I'm glad your room request is still correct. I don't know how it happened to me, but it's correct now....so it's all good.

hahaha.....I understand where the Canetti Hotel is located now. That's very funny. I think we should meet onboard then. Maybe we can all do a 3:00pm Promenade Lounge meet and greet. Is anyone else interested in doing this?

YES I remember Jolly Rogers.....I grew up there and loved that place....ahhhhh great memories.

Sounds like you and Sandy have taken care of answering all the questions! Sorry you had so much trouble with your ressie. That would freak me out!
I do look forward to meeting LIers who remember it as it was! I went to Nassau Community College in the old Mitchell Field hangars, so I'm dating myself!

A meetup at 3:00 p.m. sounds great in the Promenade Lounge. I'm so excited :yay: Can't believe I have to wait another year!

Wow, looks like a lot of New York area connections on this thread.
I grew up in Whitestone Queens and now live in Commack, Long Island.

There are a lot of great places in Manhattan that we could use for a pre-cruise meet and mingle, so as we get a little closer to sail date we can gauge interest and come up with a plan. Paul

You Must Be From Long Island If:

You live in the shadow of the greatest city in the world, but you almost never go there.

When you're away from Long Island, you love it and when you're there, you don't.

You think if you're not from Long Island or NYC, you're not really from New York.

You know the exact point at which Queens turns into Nassau simply on intuition.

You don't go to Manhattan, you go to "The City."

You never realize you have an accent 'til you leave.

You think that everything north of the Bronx is "upstate." New Jersey sucks.

At some point in your life you've gone clamming.

Either your parents or your grandparents lived in the city.

You'd pay $11.50 for a movie.

You don't live in Long Island, you live ON Long Island.

Your distant future might involve the state of Florida.

You can correctly pronounce places like: Ronkonkoma, Hauppauge, Wantagh, Mineola, Islandia, Massapequa.

You know the location of 6 malls, a dozen McDonalds and 36 7-11's.

You never, ever want to "change at Jamaica..."

You've tried to find the Amityville Horror house.

No, you don't want mustard on that burger!!

You can't understand why a diner would ever close.

You've had a seagull crap on your car.

You have or someone you know has fallen asleep on the LIRR and ended up in one of these three places: Babylon, Port Washington or Hicksville.

You know White Castle is terrible for you and the food sucks, but you periodically "Get the Crave."

You want the Yankees to stay in the Bronx, but would probably go to more games if they moved to Manhattan.

You think that somehow the Jets and the Giants still play in New York.

You've missed that "Drunk Train," the 2:42 out of Penn and had the dreaded wait until 5:30.

You or someone you know has owned an animal that came from the North Shore Animal League.

Quick! Who's your County Executive? Don't know do you?

You've never taken an MTA bus.

The Long Island Expressway isn't really as bad as everybody thinks.

You don't associate Fire Island with gay men.

You know which parts of the Godfather were filmed on Long Island.

You think Islip MacArthur airport is cute and you enjoyed watching it grow up.

Billy Joel said it best, "either you date a rich girl from the North Shore or a cool girl from the South Shore."

You don't really see the big deal about the Hamptons, unless you got smashed at the Bordy Barn.

When people ask, "Where are you from?" you answer, Long Guy Land and automatically assume everyone in the world knows that answer means New York.

You've always liked Billy Joel and you own several of his "records."

The Belt Parkway sucks! You've been stuck in a traffic jam for more than 2 hours (without moving).

Your parents took you to All American, Nathan's or Carvel (on the way home from the beach).

Regular gas - $3.29 and you still pay it!!!

You hate paying tolls.

You don't have to go far to see your family.

You remember Grumman.

You know the color of the water at Jones Beach is not BLUE!

You were upset when all the Roy Rogers turned into Wendy's and Arby's closed for good.

You can spout off all the LIRR stops between Penn Station ad Huntington.

Paying $35 for a haircut doesn't sound so crazy.

You think people from Brooklyn are "da wunz dat tawk with a accent."

You went sledding in the sumps.

You knew of Massapequa before the Amy Fisher - Joey Buttafuoco nightmare.

You think going to Queens is a hike.

The first time you heard the term, "Long Island Iced Tea" you were somewhere else and you laughed.

When you live somewhere else and are astounded to see that people actually stop at yellow lights.

When you just sort of presume that wherever you live, you'll be able to find good delis, good pizza and good bagels.

You can name at least three bands that came from Long Island.

When you walk in the city and you see two men holding hands...it becomes normal to you.

No word ends in an ER, just an AH.

You actually get these jokes and pass them on to other friends from Long Island.

You Must Be From Long Island If:

You live in the shadow of the greatest city in the world, but you almost never go there.

Etc.

:lmao:

The one that especially got to me was about knowing people who feel asleep on the LIRR and missed their stop. I can't tell you how many times my dad did this.

Six degree of separation story. When I was in high school, we had a student teacher who would always talk about this band his brother and he managed, called The Hassles. The Hassles had a keyboardist by the name of William Joel. I still have a copy of their album and a 45 with Hour of the Wolf on one side and 4'o clock in the morning on the other.

Hi everybody,

unfortunately we will not be on this cruise with you guys anymore, as we have decided to do the NYC to the Bahamas one at the end of August instead. We wish you all a wonderful time onboard, have a great cruise! :cheer2:

Hi Everyone!!! We're on this cruise too. It will be our 15th DCL cruise. It will be me and my DH travelling. We are Deb and John or EllaEnchanted and 1Grumpy John. Travelling with us in his own room will be our adult grandson Tom and his girlfriend Tiffany.

The reason we want to do this cruise is because John and I were born and raised on Long Island NY. We live in the Pocono Mountains in PA right now, but we're still New Yorkers at heart. The thing we want to do the most is take the Magic under the Verrazano bridge. We were recently on the Wonder going under the Golden Gate. It was pretty awesome. We also went under the Americas bridge in the Panama Canal. All very cool. The Verazzano will be special.....especially for me because I have sat in traffic on that bridge for three hours every mothers day. I lived on Staten Island at the time and I visited my mom on Long Island. I can't wait to sail under her on my favorite DCL ship.

Hey Pal - I think we like to sail under bridges together :lmao::rotfl2::lmao::rotfl2:

We are Paul and Nan joining you on the cruise - Deb and John are friends from our Panama Canal cruise in 2008

We are going to have the kids join us in NYC for the long weekend - then we ship them back home for school  and we go to play :woohoo:

This will be our first vaca without the kids and a pre-anniversary 15 years in Nov for us.

Can't wait - I've never been to NYC before so I'm really excited about the land part as well as sea.

Hi Nan, I LOVE that you and Paul will be travelling with us on this cruise....hahaha.....yes, this will be the 3rd bridge that we have sailed under together so I guess we like doing that for some reason.....haha.

Well Tom and Tiffany are NOT going to be joining us for this cruise. John and I want to go without kids, even though they are adults now. I would much rather share our dinner table with Nan and Paul.

Nan, we will definitely do a pre-meet in NYC the night before the cruise.

As far as being in NYC for the first time.....it's big, it's crowded, it's expensive, it's worth it!!!

Sandy....I can't tell you how many times I woke up in Babylon because I fell asleep on the train and missed changing trains at Jamaica. So I had to ride back to Jamaica and switch trains and then go to Long Beach where I lived at the time. I always did it when I was most tired and it was always a late night getting home which made it worse.

Keep that record Sandy. What a rare find....Billy Joel when he was still William on a 45 no less. That's special!!
